[00:00:20] You better hurry right back though
[00:01:22] season 11 winner Ty McDonald. We talk about a lot of different things in this podcast.
[00:01:25] I really got to know Ty when I was in Toronto
[00:01:29] for Bryce and Wynn last season.
[00:01:31] He was featured on one of our Real Talk panels
[00:01:33] and he came out to one of our events
[00:01:34] and I was so excited to meet Ty
[00:01:37] and blown away by his personality.
[00:01:39] I really feel like it's hard to understand Ty
[00:01:42] unless you really know him,
[00:01:44] unless he really kind of allows you to know who he really is
[00:01:48] which is very Talk to me. How has everything, how's your new year been? Been great so far, can't complain. Lots of wins. So we're off to a good start this year, and I just wanna keep that going throughout the rest of the year. Okay, we love it, we love it, we love it.
[00:03:00] I am excited to have you on the podcast.
[00:03:03] Wanna talk a little big brother,
[00:03:05] but I really wanna talk more about you. I knew that you won. I knew that you were like into fitness and I knew that you were like a relatively like attractive guy. And so in my mind, be honest, I was like, yeah,
[00:04:21] Ty and I are not going to get along.
[00:04:22] Or like, I don't think that Ty is like,
[00:04:24] that's just my honest thoughts.
[00:04:26] So I remember I met Ty thoughts of you, because I was talking mostly to Wendell when setting up that panel, I was like, oh, Wendell's the outgoing one. He's the more friendly person. And then Bryce seems a little bit standoffish or not as interested in getting to know me.
[00:05:40] And that was cool with me.
[00:05:41] Cause I feel like at the end of the day,
[00:05:42] it's like, in person, it's always better to meet someone
[00:05:45] in person and feel them all that way.
[00:05:46] But yeah, my initial thoughts were always I don't know who you texted. So we know you won Big Brother season 11. Like, were you a fan of Big Brother? I didn't even know what really Big Brother was before my season. I understood the concept of it, just like people competing in a house and obviously there's one winner in the end, but I didn't really understand what the game was about
[00:07:02] or how to play it.
[00:07:04] But while going through the casting process,
[00:07:06] I watched two seasons because like, it's gonna go this, this, like this sequence, because I didn't know what to expect. You know what I mean? Like, rounding to the show, I know that there's a lot of twists and turns along the way. So it was just a matter of me taking things one step at a time. I knew that I wanted to walk in and solid was his number one as well. So with him getting caught in that situation and ultimately deciding to leave, that was a huge part of my game. I actually, I didn't, from that point, I didn't think I was winning. I'm like, there's no way I can win this, especially with what was happening and how it kind of unfolded. I was like, there's really no way I can win this game. Maybe I'll survive one or two weeks,
[00:09:40] but I'm not gonna be able to make it out of this.
[00:09:43] But in the end of it all, he walked out
[00:09:46] and I was contemplating like the hub, the center of a bunch of different, I guess, rival neighborhoods. So right before I went into the house as a personal trainer, been doing that for 10 years. So I started that like graduating high school. Um, so that's like really my bread and butter. I've always been an athlete, grew up playing sports, damn near everything. And then, um, can you play soccer? I started playing soccer and I'll, I do play soccer.
[00:13:23] do it or anything, but it was always like in the back of my mind and I joined and I loved it. I was great at it as well. And yeah, so I was in there for two and a half years.
[00:13:27] And then when I went to the States for school, that's when I stopped with the army stuff
[00:13:31] and really focused on sports and getting my degree in athletic training, came home, started
[00:13:35] my own personal training business. And that's what I did up until the show.
[00:13:40] And now that you've won big brother, what are you doing now?
[00:13:44] So now I, well, I'm going to throw yourself with people who believe in you and who are doing the things that you say you wanna do
[00:15:00] because then when you see others doing it,
[00:15:02] it gives yourself that belief,
[00:15:03] oh, it can be done, a very just general conversation. Like my goal is to, you know, figure out what your biggest goals are.
[00:16:24] Like, so like we're going to go so there. I love that. Cause I feel like, especially like in the black community and people of color, right? We don't seek coaching, right? Or counseling a lot. But you think when you're in school and you're struggling with math, like, you know, you got to stay after school or you need a tutor. And so I really love the fact that you are doing
[00:17:40] like this success coaching
[00:17:42] because there are so many things in life that,
[00:17:44] you know, we're figuring out or just learning. from HOHs? Yeah. Do you think without you winning how you won all of those vetoes and HOHs, do you think that you would still be the winner if you didn't, if you had to rely on your social abilities? I think, yes, for the simple fact of the level of adversity, I had to maneuver.
[00:19:03] So it's like, it might they must have shown some crazy stuff.
[00:20:20] So I watched it myself and there's moments
[00:20:24] where I could see I'm frustrated
[00:20:25] and I'm talking a little bit stern or whatever,
[00:20:27] but there's nothing that I feel like also what is, I'm gonna say also an end and gear like a billion times, but I feel like a part of me wanting to, when someone's breaking down crying and spilling their life story to me, and I'm consoling them, right? Because that's not the direction they're trying to take it. So and then to my upbringing, it's just like that's all I was brought up in the way where it's like, you got to be tough, bro. Like, suck it up, stop crying about it. It's not a matter of being mean to anybody. It's just a very matter
[00:23:01] of fact way of approaching situations. And that's, I'm already used to being judged in certain ways and kind of looked at in certain lights. So it didn't really bother me. It wasn't nothing that I wasn't already accustomed to before going on the show, right. So for me, it was just a matter of, you know, giving it time and like people will eventually get to meet me in person if they take the time to do so. And they can make the actual judgment off me.
[00:24:23] Then, you know, see judging me from a TV show and an edit is
[00:24:27] one thing, but when you get to know somebody, it's a very at how open you are. And I'll be honest, like in my life, I struggle making connections specifically with like black men, right? Because how I was grown up and I was teased, I was bullied. I went through a lot. And so the person that you see today,
[00:25:40] I still have some of those traumas and triggers with me.
[00:25:43] And so when I see plus community. Can you, would you consider yourself an ally? It's funny you say that. Somebody asked me that maybe two weeks ago, what is an ally? Cause you know, the person I was talking to
[00:27:00] is very problematic and I feel like they were just trying
[00:27:02] to get a certain answer out of me.
[00:27:03] So I'd rather hear from someone like yourself
[00:27:05] who's not looking for, you me, an ally is someone that sees people as people, acknowledges them, supports them, and shows up for them, and stands up for them. Yeah, no, I have a personal- So that's my definition. That's what an ally is, and yeah, I'm definitely an ally.
[00:28:21] For me, we all have our different struggles,
[00:28:26] myself included, I'm not a gay black man by any means, That's how I live my life. I don't have the energy to be judging people for their own, like live your life. Have one life, whatever makes you happy to do that. You know what I mean? I respect that. I feel like in talking to you more, sometimes I feel like it's like your delivery, right? Like I feel like you're just, you are matter of fact.
[00:29:42] And it's like, you know, like, I don't know.
[00:29:46] I gotta tell you all that man, I'm sorry.
[00:29:48] I'm just like tight, yeah. You guys still friends? I'm, listen, I can't, you know, I feel like I've done quite a few interviews and podcasts where I talk on the situation. Um, I think I'm at a point now where I can't really speak for both of us.
[00:31:00] I know that on my side, I'm great.
[00:31:02] I'll always want the best for her.
[00:31:04] You know what I mean?
[00:31:05] That was a significant part of my experience on Big Brother. I feel like I have a lot of healing to do, a lot of like rewiring what a healthy relationship looks like. My mom and my dad split up before I was even born, so I never saw my mom and my dad together. My dad was in the army, so he was away a lot too. So I think I'm at a point now where I just care for peace and like a respectful relationship with somebody.
[00:32:20] It's not even like I'm trying to just jump straight into labels and all that. Like if
[00:32:23] I need to build something that I feel is be number one for me. I can't respect you and the people around you don't respect you then it's not it. Because you got you got to respect yourself too. You got to hold yourself to a
[00:33:42] certain standard. I know I hold myself to's also standard then Why you not in love and in the relationship because those things aren't standard in today's day and age at least with the people that I run into All right, and I think like I said for me I have stuff to work on myself So it's right I'm perfect by any means, you know, so you keep you keep saying that are you what what does working on it?
[00:35:01] mean though, I think that for me it's
[00:36:02] coming with a certain type of energy that I don't want them to be receiving from.
[00:36:05] How well do you take to criticism?
[00:36:07] I don't think anybody will have criticism.
[00:36:10] And you're not gonna see me going back and forth with it.
[00:36:12] I've gotten a ton of feedback on what people don't like.
[00:36:15] I'm talking more like in a personal level.
[00:36:17] Like say you have a friend or a partner that's like,
[00:36:21] I don't like when you, like, you know,
[00:36:23] are you able in real time to reflect on that?
[00:36:26] Or, because that's something that they're getting upset. It's my delivery. I got to figure out how to deliver it better. But I also think we have to, and I don't know how this like, I am loving this conversation. I feel like these are the conversations I have with my friends and again, I'm saying
[00:37:40] everything with love. So I just hope that as long as there is respect behind it. But as soon as there's no, if there's this step behind it, then it's like, it's not a constructive conversation anymore. It's just you trying to put me down, you know? So we're not gonna have this conversation because I don't wanna engage with that energy. So once you calm down then we can circle back and try to talk like respectable human beings.
[00:39:00] But until we're at that point,
[00:39:01] then I'm not gonna engage it.
[00:39:02] I just don't want the energy.
[00:39:03] I don't have it.
[00:39:04] I had this thing with my friends
[00:39:06] and people that are close in my life Yeah, yeah. No, I like that. I like that for sure. I feel like eventually you should be able to get to a point where you just don't even need to set the... Oh no. Well, I mean, listen, like I said, I'm on a journey, Ty. It's a journey. It's a journey. It's a journey. I don't know if I'm that before I get to that destination. So that's why we set the sharing
[00:40:20] is scary.
[00:40:21] Listen, if it works, if it game. Oh He don't got nothing extra this man got it designated game room. What type of games do you play?
[00:41:43] Man, I play you got Call of Duty FIFA overwatch. I say
[00:42:44] So you talk about your experience on Big Brother Canada.
[00:42:50] If Big Brother Canada call and say we doing an all-star, are you in or you got to think about it?
[00:42:53] I'm already at the front door.
[00:42:54] Open the gates, I'm here.
[00:42:55] What are we talking about?
[00:42:58] What are we talking about?
[00:42:59] I'm ready to go.
[00:42:59] Okay, now.
[00:43:02] So you want to be on the challenge, right?
[00:43:04] Because I personally,
[00:43:05] I think you would be great on the challenge USA.
[00:43:08] I don't know what's going on. to watch in the game, especially when it comes to the challenges, because it's like clearly when you get locked in, it's clearly we see. How important is legacy to you? Huge. To me, that's one of the most important things. I think that legacy isn't a great indicator
[00:44:22] of the energy you bring to the world. You know what and I use that very broadly, cared about his friends, their family, you know, being a better person himself and like growing as an individual and like breaking, if you want to call them generational curses, like things like that. Someone who just cares and is like positive.
[00:45:41] I want people to like, when they experience me, they just feel like, you know, Tyra is
[00:45:46] a good guy.
[00:45:48] That's a big thing for me. that there's gonna be something here to remind people of her. And so what are some of the things that you have done with the foundation? So in August, we did a back to school events where I raised money for back school supplies and backpacks for the local elementary school in my neighborhood, the one I actually went to as a kid.
[00:47:02] And then in December, so I'm sure she's like super happy that I've done something in her name. Um, but yeah, it's not something that I've actually sat down and like, Hey mom, how do you feel about this? You know, it's not something I've done. Yeah. Okay. Uh, do you cook? Uh, I can cook. That's, that's what you're asking me. I can cook. No, that
[00:48:21] was, yeah. Yeah. I can't, I can't cook. I do cook. Um, but could be nasty. All right, so next time I have it, I'm going to send you a picture. Please. Then you can let the people know. Oh, and then I'm going to let you know. But address it to BRICE. I got you. Your IC. I got you this time. Would, um, I can cook. Oh, God.
[00:49:40] What is you?
[00:49:40] What do you cook?
[00:49:46] It's a lot of hesitation.
[00:49:46] I'm from Toronto. OK, if you're saying CH, you're from the GTA, you're not from Toronto. And anybody from Toronto will verify that. So because we need to clear this up right now. So when I said Toronto, I was right.
[00:51:01] Toronto. Yeah, exactly how you said you're good.
[00:51:03] Toronto is someone who's like from the States.
[00:51:06] That's how I was saying it. Toronto.
[00:51:08] Yeah, that's how I'm feeling my lines. No, okay, listen. No, I definitely listen to Dre. That's honestly like he's been one of my favorite artists like for long and like I remember. Like I remember being in high school and just like resonating with the songs. I'm like, man, this guy's been crazy. He's just been relevant for over a decade straight.
[00:52:21] Like he hasn't had a follow up.
[00:52:23] Well, I mean.
[00:52:24] When is he ever following up?
[00:52:26] I'll like. So hold on, I feel like isn't type A like. I feel like type A is. The alpha male, no? I don't think it has anything to do with like alpha male, but it's like you're very like organized,
[00:53:41] you're very like scheduled detailed, you're very.
[00:53:43] Oh yeah, type B is like very creative,
[00:53:44] the very vocalizing.
[00:53:46] C. I love it. I mean, I had so many other questions for you, but I just feel like this conversation has just taken a life of its own. And I really appreciate it, which is what I wanted this conversation to be. If you could give advice to six-year-old Tyrell
[00:55:05] from yourself now, what would it be? how the hell I was gonna do that. And I did it on Big Brother Canada and I won the show. So it's just like the energy you put out there, that's why I'm a big believer in the universe and like energy and like I'm spiritual, I'm not religious because I think it's disrespectful for me to call myself religious when there's people out there who follow the Bible or the Quran religiously. I'm definitely not that person but I do believe in a higher power, a higher being, something greater than us here on
[00:56:22] this earth. And I feel like I was very green people with big ass heads? I don't know how they look, but I do think that there is... It'd be pretty ignorant, I think, to think that we are the only life forms out there. Given how much we are constantly learning about ourselves,
[00:57:41] let alone what's out there and there's so much out there and it's ever growing, right?
[00:57:44] And that's science, so it's not beings like you know beings out there but I believe some of them are here oh I mean it would be it would be pretty I wouldn't be surprised like it sounds crazy but the more you think about things and even the stuff that's going on in our world now it's just like
[00:59:02] oh it wouldn't wouldn't be too crazy to think that it's actually happening you know about you? People don't know about me. I don't know if they don't know about me. They probably learned it eventually. I have a big heart. I care deeply for people to a point, almost to a fault sometimes. People will take advantage of it. So that's something that I,
[01:00:21] even again, something I'm learning myself where it is like, what do you think that is? I don't think it's, um, I don't feel this coldness. I could see why people can receive it that way. Again, something I'm working on, like just be having a warmer presence. Um, again, I think that's just the nurturing of myself where I came from. You're not, you shouldn't be showing emotions because that's weakness where I'm from. So it's like, and
[01:01:44] it's that goes either way. You're not. I got to get your Pisces. Big Pisces. When's your birthday? February 27. Okay. Coming up. My birthday is coming up as well. You are a bit older than my birthday. February 20th. I'll be turning.
[01:03:00] I am turning.
[01:03:01] I'll be younger than you.
[01:03:02] No, there's no way.
[01:03:04] I'm trying to get older.
[01:03:06] No way.
[01:03:06] You know what? So what'd that got to do with your age though? Because I play Call of Duty. Okay. An hour and a half minimum a week. Okay. The grilled chicken that I grill defines the type B personality that I have.
[01:04:23] Okay.
[01:04:24] Because when you are in a top performer arena I'm sorry, I'm having like a real life moment because Ty, you're cracking me up. It's the more stuff that I am learning about you I love because it's like, you remind me of Wendell a lot in so many different ways. And it's like, this new information that I am learning about you, I cannot wait to use it against you as I will just beraid you with love.
[01:05:42] But it's like, they're just so funny, Ty,
[01:05:45] because it's like, what's your birthday?
[01:05:47] February 27th. I am standoffish and I am standoffish on purpose sometimes because again of my upbringing, right? Like if I am not friendly or if I'm not then you won't tease me you won't kind of get to know me So it's like no I get it. I'm an introvert But an extrovert. Yeah So no, I'm saying like I know I'm saying it makes so much more sense now that we're learning this and
[01:07:05] You tie you don't you
[01:08:06] me is like, I feel like growing up, I always had to be overconfident in myself because I didn't have that reassurance from the people that I felt like when you're a kid, you're supposed to boost your
[01:08:11] account, like you could do anything. I never got, I got it at home for my mom. I can never, like I
[01:08:16] said, I can never do no wrong with my mom, my nanny, but going to school, like I'm always, look,
[01:08:20] I'm expected to do less than, I'm expected to be yourself in the right mindset. I am the greatest. I am this, I am that. It's like, yeah, if you set those things out to somebody else, you sound like a piece of shit. Like who do this guy think he is? But it's literally just talking to yourself and getting yourself into a space where, you know, your insecurities and your doubts no longer control you. You know what I mean? That
[01:09:40] confidence takes over and it pushes you forward to where you're trying to get to. Did you see that amazing venue. Sometimes I could be not a Debbie Downer, but sometimes with Wendell and I's friendship, it's like sometimes I'm like the realest, right? Like, so he feels like I'm bringing the negativity or like I'm always speaking negative about something, but it's like I'm a planner. So it's like, I kind of plan for the worst, expect the best.
[01:11:04] Wendell is kind of like the exact opposite. can control is how We operate and how we're thinking you know how we're feeling in any given moment So it's like, you know, we always like you for yourself. You're you call yourself a realist
[01:12:23] We're always looking for the worst possible case scenario, but it's like alright cool
[01:12:26] Yeah, obviously this can go wrong other. Whereas when you have the deck open, it was more spread out and it's going to be less interactive, you know? So it probably worked out in the benefit of David. No, it did. I agree. You got focused on the positive. There you go. What is an alley-oop? An alley-oop? In what context are you talking about? I mean, you're ball game, right? So what's an alley-oop?
[01:13:42] An alley-oop is like an opportunity that it's like nothing to complain about. Um, yeah, nothing. Nothing to complain about anyway. Like what you talk about time. You were the best podcast ever. What you talking about? But you know what, I have a request though. I need you to get somebody on this podcast that deserves to be on this podcast. Talk their shit.
[01:15:00] I think you would be a great person to bring that out of them.
[01:15:03] Oh,
[01:15:07] listen.
[01:15:08] Okay.
[01:16:03] the tie-isms, that's my new phrase. I'm gonna start using it.
[01:16:05] Cause you just did it with showing your man love,
[01:16:07] but it's also like the best player ever
[01:16:10] in big other Canada.
[01:16:12] Now I only seen two.
[01:16:13] I only seen two seasons.
[01:16:14] But listen, from what I know,
[01:16:17] from what I know, no, yeah, we love Daniel.
[01:16:21] I will set it up, we can make it happen.
[01:16:23] But honestly though Ty, I appreciate you.
[01:16:24] Thank you for being so open, honest,
[01:16:27] having these conversations with me.
