[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And last year I thought I had her, I thought I had snagged her in, the fishing boat captain

[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And then I sent her Christine Shields, she wanted me to send her

[00:01:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, what'd she say? Nope, pass

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Cause Zoe doesn't watch Survivor, she didn't watch it before

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_03]: She wasn't really familiar so she doesn't do podcasts or interviews

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_03]: So I sent her Christine Shields, cause Rob, I was trying to figure

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Which one of these podcasts should I send her?

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Where it doesn't scare her away, it doesn't do gliss

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_03]: So I sent her Christine Shields and then she got back with me

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And she was so sweet, she goes you know what T-Bird

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Life is just really hectic right now

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like oh man, so this year we got her

[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_03]: And I know that all of her fans are gonna be so excited to hear from her

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_07]: And congratulations are in order for you T-Bird

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_07]: Because T-Bird was one of the 20 people and 10 women

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_07]: That there was a little thing, Mike Bloom was super busy all summer

[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_07]: And Mike Bloom every day did a podcast

[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_07]: And he said okay who should come back from each season of Survivor

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_07]: And then after Mike Bloom got all done, there was a vote

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_07]: And they got it down to 50 people

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Who do you want to come back for Survivor 50?

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_07]: And then from the 50 people, they got it down to 20 people that were voted

[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_07]: And Mike Bloom recently revealed the results of the 20 people

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Voted by the fans who they want to see come back for Survivor 50

[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_07]: And of course, Teresa T-Bird Cooper

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_07]: One of the 20, congratulations

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Our guest today played on the fourth season of Survivor Mark Kasis

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_03]: This then 35-year-old said she applied because of a dare from a local islander

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: She said she thought it would also broaden her horizons

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: after growing up in such a remote area with only a one-room school, kerosene and gas lights

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_03]: A small fishing community of only 60 people 12 miles off the coast of Maine, Monhegan Island

[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_03]: She had never watched Survivor

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_03]: But she figured she wouldn't have any problems surviving

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_03]: because she had spent most of her life outdoors

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Nicknamed the Lobster Lady

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: She had been a commercial lobster fisherman for 17 years and a charter boat captain

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Even though she did not work out in a gym

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Lifting lobster traps gave her an edge with her strength

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_03]: To prepare, she read a few books that Mark Burnett had written

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And one he suggested was about a young sailor who visits Nukahiva

[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: As far as the videos, the only season she was able to find was the

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_03]: The first of tapes from the first Survivor season

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Which she said, quote, didn't give me a real clear picture as to what the Alliance did for you

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_03]: End quote

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_03]: She was placed on the Row 2 tribe which would become the dominant tribe

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_03]: They won the first three immunity challenges

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_03]: But on day 10, she would find herself in a tribe switch

[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_03]: After this tribe switch, she would become part of the Row 2-4

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_03]: The remaining players formed a counter-Alliance

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_03]: But she would then betray her Alliance

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Which would begin the first ever breakdown of a dominant tribe

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_03]: She said she tried to adapt

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Quote, my only strategy was kind of going about my business the way I do it

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I was just doing my thing out there and exploring and diving and looking for food

[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_03]: End quote

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_03]: She tried to fit in even making shell jewelry for her tribe

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_03]: But slowly she began letting her Alliance know in little ways

[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_03]: That she no longer was part of an Alliance and had no intention of sticking with them

[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Quote, they weren't people I trusted from the get-go

[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'm kind of off on my own

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_03]: End quote

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_03]: She would make it to day 27 and become the second jury member

[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_03]: She said there was a lot of politics in the game

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: And she played being true to herself, strength, and honor

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Quote

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_03]: This Alliance thing, boy, didn't it just get in the way?

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't take it as seriously as they did

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_03]: End quote

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I introduced the woman proud of the fact that she stood alone

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And wasn't really a part of an Alliance

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_03]: An independent, strong, outspoken woman with the work-hard, play-hard attitude

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Love what you do, have a passion, and live it

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_04]: There's a tuna season that's going on now

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_04]: So I've been doing a little bit of tuna fishing

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_04]: With my old apprentice captain

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm running his mate

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And we caught a tuna fish early June

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And we were just out trying to catch one the other day

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_04]: But when I'm not out there doing that

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm painting and doing some stuff

[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Where I'm standing now on a porch

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Out at Dead Man's Cove on Monhagen Island

[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm painting some house trim

[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I work for my brother in his business here

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_04]: On Higgins Restorations

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_04]: And always to rebuild and do out here

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_04]: It's great to work outdoors

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you have more than 60 people now on the island?

[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, in the summertime, yes

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But in the wintertime, actually

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_04]: The population has dropped quite a bit

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Because when I went to school here

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_04]: There were 13 kids

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Now there's only like two or three kids in school

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's probably more like down to

[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know, 50?

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_07]: Tell me about this island

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_07]: So this is a small island

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_07]: And this is where you live, Zoe?

[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_04]: It's where I grew up

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Where I spent the first 40 years of my life

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_04]: And my mom's family's lived here for a long, long time

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a small fishing community

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_04]: In the wintertime

[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And then in the summertime

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_04]: The population grows to maybe 500

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_04]: During the day when the ferry boats come

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_04]: From the mainland out to the island

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And people come out and walk the island day trip

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_04]: The island is very small

[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_04]: It's smaller than Central Park

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_04]: It's only a mile long by a mile and a half

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_07]: Do you know everybody's name that's on the island?

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_04]: All of the people that live here year round

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes

[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_04]: But not all of the guests

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_07]: What if somebody moves?

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_07]: Does everybody have to have like sort of like

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_07]: Hold on, we don't know

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_07]: Like could we vet these people a little bit?

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, you have to have a warm house

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So you don't move too much

[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, there are some people

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Sell their home and other people move to the island

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And they become part of the community

[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's a great place to grow up

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_04]: But after 40 years here

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I needed to

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Or 35 years when I did Survivor a while ago

[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was good to get off and see the world

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I bet they love having you back for the summers

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, my brother certainly loves it

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And it is nice to see people that I've grown up with

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_04]: And have known or have known me since I was a very little girl

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And Zoe, it seems like when you move since Survivor

[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_03]: You're always around water

[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're in LA

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_03]: You're in Fort Lauderdale

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_03]: But didn't you got to spend a lot of time in Australia as well?

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I was older when I went there

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_04]: I had to get a work visa which was because I was older

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_04]: And I did

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I was in the Coffs Harbour area

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Which is part of New South Wales, Australia

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Very, a really beautiful spot

[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I worked a lot outdoors there

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Campfire cooking

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And just doing all sorts of outdoor jobs

[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_04]: With my work visa

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't do this

[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't do any work in Australia without a work visa

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Because they're very strict on their immigration laws

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_07]: So Zoe, you have this super interesting background

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_07]: How did you then get involved with Survivor at sort of the peak of its popularity?

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_07]: How did you end up crossing paths with them?

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_07]: Like the program?

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, getting involved with

[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_07]: How did you go from minding your own business to then being out in the Marquesa?

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Wow, that's a very good question

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Because Survivor was not

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_04]: You couldn't watch Survivor on Monhagen Island

[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Because you couldn't get CBS for some reason

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_04]: If you didn't have a satellite dish

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And not many people had

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Nobody had a satellite dish

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_04]: So one of my captains who I did my apprenticeship with

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_04]: He got a satellite dish

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_04]: And he was able to watch the program

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_04]: And people would go over to his house

[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: But back to your question as I digress in conversation here

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Sorry about that

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_07]: You're good

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_04]: My friend Barbara Hitchcock said

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Somebody told me about the show

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And I said it sounds interesting

[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_04]: And she sort of dared me to do it

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And she runs one of the businesses out here

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_04]: The Black Duck

[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a little gift shop and coffee shop

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And I go to her for advice

[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I grew up with her

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_04]: She's a little older than I was

[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And she said, you know

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Like if you want to get out and see the world

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Well do something different

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_04]: So Survivor was certainly something different

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And so we have paper

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Perfect

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Perfect

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_03]: But when you went out there

[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess you didn't realize that the alliance

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Or the camaraderie

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Or No Man is an Island

[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Was an important way to go about it

[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I know

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Well you know on living growing up on Monhigan

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_04]: You want to be independent in your own self

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_04]: But you work with a community

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_04]: And I mean I have alliances

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_04]: We'll say on the island

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Or relationships with people

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Like my fishing community

[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_04]: When I was fishing out here

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_04]: But I guess I don't know

[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_04]: It was sort of like

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_04]: It was very different

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_04]: The alliance

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_04]: The way it all formed on Survivor

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And I wasn't sure where to go at times

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_07]: Also that you all had not even seen that much Survivor

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_07]: I know you said you only watched the best of DVDs

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_07]: But I'm pretty sure

[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_07]: So you all went and filmed your season

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_07]: Shortly after 9-11, right?

[00:15:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_04]: They almost didn't have the program

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Because we were in the city

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know it was flights and things like that

[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And the Marquesas is a stretch to get there

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_07]: And you had not even seen TeeBird season

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_07]: Which I think started running maybe the first episode

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_04]: No I hadn't

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I would have liked to have seen the whole season

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And I still haven't yet

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_04]: But I went onto a website

[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Internet is very spotty out here

[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_04]: So sometimes you can't think

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm lucky that we're having this conversation now

[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah so you all didn't even have that much to work with

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_07]: In terms of like what you knew coming into the fourth season of Survivor

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_04]: But you also for me I had to be I don't know true to myself

[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_07]: Zoe is from everything that I understand about Survivor Marquesis

[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_07]: It was one of the hardest seasons physically

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_07]: But you're somebody who's used to maybe being in some like unforgiving environments

[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Did you find Marquesis to be a absolutely incredibly difficult place to experience 27 days

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_04]: No not really it was kind of nice

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_07]: Because I hear about the bugs the the no-no's and we had no food

[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah yeah you really there was some control like you really had to control yourself

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_07]: And the beach had too much coral

[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah there was that too and you know trying to

[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was always wanting to be in the water looking for the troka shells

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Looking for the food in the trees looking for things

[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_04]: With Nellie and we're climbing and you know I don't know it was

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Or looking for firewood you know we had to have enough

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_04]: We had to boil water all the time we had to the taro root

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_04]: We had to boil that because it wasn't a cultivated taro root so it was very fibrous

[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_04]: To eat it and that was like our only starch you know we were told that

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_04]: You know we're not giving you any food on this

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was like oh okay well figure it out

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_04]: They let us know that there were things available to eat out there in the woods

[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Or in the ocean and you know we just had to go look for them

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah and I was like trying to motivate people to go look for things

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And sometimes people wanted to do that and sometimes people didn't

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_04]: So you just kind of I just like to eat

[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah I do too

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_04]: So the bugs were bad yeah the bugs were bad

[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_04]: And you just the lady on the other team I've unfortunately forgotten her name

[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_04]: But she was scratching a lot and it really yeah you can't

[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah you know I think maybe I didn't give Tammy enough chance

[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe she was just totally on her game you know like she was just so serious

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And I wasn't I don't know I wasn't that serious

[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_04]: So I was maybe at that point where I wasn't you know saying

[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey this is if you know this could be something and you could win here

[00:22:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was a more on you know on safari

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_04]: So and the general I don't know I always got along with him

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_04]: You know Boston Rob sometimes I could have felt like you know

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Giving him a few bops you know knuckle sandwiches

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_04]: But when I look back at it yeah I mean Tammy was a hot ticket

[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_04]: She knew what she wanted and she was going for it so that was

[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah Zoe so in the show it's really presented like okay the row two four

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_07]: Is this group that they are sort of like rock solid of that's

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_07]: They're going to the end

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_07]: Was that how it was in the real life or did that get sort of played up by the show

[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_04]: No it was crazy we won like the first seven

[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Like I don't know just kept winning the challenges

[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah like we were like just inherently forming that alliance that was so important

[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know I like when we all came together to compete it was we were great I thought

[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So I don't I don't think it was played up and you know I don't

[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_04]: It's hard to say with the editing but yeah no we I felt that

[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_04]: That we were very strong and you knew something was going to happen

[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Do you think anybody would have been tempted to go outside the row 2-4 if it got down to it

[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Um I think Nellia and Pascal were pretty tight and so

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_07]: But would anybody from the four want to bring them in like oh come on we gotta we gotta keep Pascal

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah I mean Pascal was great I do remember though him collapsing in my arms he um he was very

[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Dehydrated at the jury uh like a ponderosa or the game was this was like we were waiting

[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_04]: To to do something and we were in line like lined up and he just he he collapsed and he had

[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_04]: To be taken away for a while and you know get fixed up right yeah he was very I can't exactly

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_07]: Or maybe it was to jury I don't know it's been a lot the part where he he gets uh he

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_07]: Draws the the rock and he goes and he's out of the game and then the next night he's not at

[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_07]: Tribal council because and they and John like gives the update on Pascal you know he needed

[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_07]: To get some fluids and then he comes back for the final tribal council yes yes I'm sorry I

[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_07]: Think I got away from your previous question no that's uh no no problem look this is a long

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Time ago Zoe yes yeah I'm getting older and my memory's getting a little less next time I'm

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_07]: That would be the smart thing to do yeah I mean uh that was good I mean she was able to go back

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_07]: And then look things up uh you know that was like proved to be like uh you know a great

[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean even now every day like when I would lobster fishing you write down things different

[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Fishing grounds and you know your catch I mean I write down little old school I do it in a

[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_04]: You know like a notebook or a calendar so it's always good to have right stuff down

[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Zoe so did you watch it when it came on I did when I had time um because when I

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Got back at the end of December I started lobster fishing though my season had started

[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_04]: In the beginning of December and because it's a very tight season fishery only six months

[00:27:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Really only two of those months are very productive when you first start out and

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes it's only one one month like you get the month of December and you get good fishing

[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_04]: And then uh the water temperature gets colder as the season goes on and so the fishing just

[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Drops off to like nothing so when I got back I had my crew and everybody waiting and

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And we went out but the fishing wasn't that good so it was kind of it was kind of tough

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_03]: But you know we survived Zoe are you telling me you when your season aired

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes you'd watch it and sometimes you wouldn't

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah well because I didn't have a satellite dish so I would have to get up and go visit

[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_04]: It um don kundi or whoever else had a satellite dish because I didn't get you know I got the local

[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_07]: Yeah I just didn't have the but they could tape it for you right

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_07]: Excuse me they could tape it right on the vcr

[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh I mean I have seen the entire show I guess on on tape but not

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Not like when it's just after it came out like at some point

[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah friends and they'd be like oh let's have a survivor party and and I'd watch an episode with

[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_07]: them and yeah you know of so do you think it's weird that people watch it now that people are

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_07]: Like you know you couldn't watch it you were on it you missed it you couldn't watch it now

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_07]: There are people it's what 22 years later and that people are watching it today Zoe

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_04]: It's amazing it truly is I was so um just I couldn't believe that it it's like held on for

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_04]: So long I mean I do because it's very popular and it you know it's a great idea um to you

[00:29:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Know you go to this wild place somewhere out in the middle of nowhere and and you know you

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Know all of the different places that they go it's such a cool program so Rob we can tell Zoe

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Four maybe well he's played five

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_07]: Played five times and he was on and there was another season that he didn't play but they

[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_07]: Just built a statue of him and he gave people he coached people oh okay I think I saw some of

[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Those and I really know what was going on there because he married a young lady that

[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_04]: He competed with yeah and then one and then they had kids I hope they're still married

[00:31:58] [SPEAKER_07]: I think the order is that he was on the show she won they were on the show he proposed she won

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Then they got married yeah oh that is so cool they have four kids and one of them can drive now

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_04]: That's I mean that doesn't even seem possible my son's 38 now and I'm like oh gosh yeah so

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Rosie gave us a car that was outstanding um and my son was getting you know he needed it was

[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Purchase a car so this way he could put that money towards college so that was cool

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh I ended up trading it in I think for something else because it's in Maine it was

[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_04]: a really good car for Maine because it was heavy enough yeah okay I don't know

[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_04]: In the deli that was so cool and then I visited New York I don't know uh like a year

[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_04]: And you know our hair was dirty and we had hair under our arms and hair and you know wherever

[00:37:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Trees because he could like shimmy up that thing like crazy like a freaking badger a

[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Thought you were gonna say it Nellia Teebird John always had like he had this big secret

[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Bathroom then you go too much this that and the other well if you're a guy after about 10 days

[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Of being on the island certain parts of your anatomy no longer work either um or not as they

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Should and after we got voted out uh little Zoe happened to walk by the tent and said hey I

[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Got something for you and all of a sudden an object uh flew through the tent window and it

[00:40:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Was a bottle of personal lubricant and she said hey see if this will work

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not gonna say whether it did or not but I might be asking for a sponsorship if I ever

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Play again thanks Zoe wow Zoe whoa I don't remember that but uh you sure that was you

[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Well I don't know must be I mean I got it sure wasn't the Cathy or something that did that

[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_04]: No I usually give blood every two months the red cross says you can give blood and if you do

[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Get a tattoo they sort of take you off the give blood list for a while so um it's sort

[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Of important for me to do that because I had a friend that needed to have her own blood for

[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Operation so I went with her the first time to do it now I just you know I figure it's a good

[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Thing to do and yeah that's great that's great yeah that's really incredible so Zoe what did

[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_04]: You think about John told I'm gonna have to call him up and ask him correct the record on

[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_03]: That allegedly we're gonna say on that he remembered it pretty clearly remember it actually

[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_03]: He had sent me a message and said just can I say can I tell this one story that's you know

[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So he seemed to really be sure it was you but hey I don't know he could have gotten it wrong

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_03]: So when you got out to when you got out to the Marquesa and met Probst probably Jeff

[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Probst to you wasn't any big deal because you probably didn't know who he was at all right

[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh I mean I knew he was like the lead guy

[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Um survivor of you know like he was the one the announcer yeah gentleman what was your

[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Opinion of Jeff or give me one word to describe Jeff one word to describe Jeff I don't think you

[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Can describe Jeff in one word because he's he's out I mean he's pretty outstanding guy

[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_04]: You know he just played the game as everyone else did or he didn't play the game but he

[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Led the game and was very um just straightforward and to go great guy like you never like I would

[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Have liked to have gone and asked him all sorts of questions but what kind of questions

[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_04]: You want to ask him oh you know like about how how to get involved in the editing and or not

[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Editing but like how to be more part of the production of survival and um instead of a

[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_07]: Contestant is that something you would have wanted to do zoe work work on a show like

[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_07]: Survivor I mean that is pretty outdoorsy there is a lot of like uh construction and

[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_04]: And actually they use a million boats now right oh no doubt yeah somebody said they were

[00:44:18] [SPEAKER_07]: Sort of working out of Fiji yeah yeah they their whole setup is Fiji now they only go to Fiji

[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_07]: Oh really every season is in Fiji wow yeah they just survivor permanently lives in Fiji

[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_04]: That's not a bad bad spot that's what they said yeah

[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_03]: We like it we're moving in yeah right right yeah I think that's about a house there didn't

[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_07]: Rob um I'm sure he I'm sure he has like a permanent uh like living space there

[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_04]: That would be handy I mean yeah you'd want one you were the oh because you would be great

[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_03]: You would be great on the crew out there wouldn't she that would be a great thing

[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I would imagine if you got to the right person that could easily be arranged

[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah yeah I would imagine you know would you still be interested in it possibly yeah

[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_07]: those two it was it I mean it got a little you thought it is it got tense in the marquesas

[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_07]: oh I don't see them getting along but they did for a while and then uh and then it

[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_04]: this never came up ever no no I you know unfortunately you know somebody's gonna pay

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_04]: the bill so yeah working just like I get home and you know I crash and don't or I don't have

[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_04]: a place to watch TV or I'm you know on the road or I'm on a boat out to sea for you know

[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_04]: for a month and um and I guess I don't utilize my phone enough to watch it's kind of old

[00:47:09] [SPEAKER_03]: updated Rob I love it yeah she she works hard she's not all brought you know all into this

[00:47:16] [SPEAKER_07]: reality I love it it's well yeah and the good news in the band is we don't have anything

[00:47:21] [SPEAKER_07]: else to catch you up on because they never brought anybody else back from Survivor marquesas

[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_04]: okay well that's good to know that was it I feel I feel a little bit enlightened now

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_07]: yeah so were there any things that you wish they would have shown that you remember

[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_04]: happening from being out there in the marquesas uh yes there there is this one scene that I

[00:47:47] [SPEAKER_04]: remember um we were all like little sardines sleeping like to keep warm because believe

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_04]: it or not it you know we were all wet coming home from tribal council and and we didn't have

[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_04]: blankets or anything so we you know like all sort of next to each other and there was um

[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_04]: and by that time we had had we had a knife and we had some tools that we had won but

[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_04]: it was at night and the camera crew was like trying to we were you know like whispering

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and they were trying to um figure out you know what was going on like we were redoing something

[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_04]: you know covert that they wanted to know about and they had this I had never seen

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_04]: a mic like that before that was all fuzzy you know like the boom mic half long and yeah yeah

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_04]: and it was at our feet and I was sleeping I always like to like I'm an aisle person on the

[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_04]: lane um t bird so I have to sleep in and I was by the table where the I always like to know where

[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_04]: the tools were and at our feet and I grabbed the knife and it was dark and I like I was about

[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_04]: ready to like chop the mic in half and all of a sudden they lit up something and like they

[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_04]: were all like wait do you think it was like a creature I did I did I thought there were no

[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_04]: raccoons there but I'm like what the heck is that this floating furry thing that's over us

[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_04]: we didn't like we I because it must have been on a long boom they didn't we didn't know that

[00:49:36] [SPEAKER_04]: they were around the camera crew yeah that was very funny I'm like I remember my I think I

[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_04]: think I had it in my right hand because I'm right-handed and I was literally about ready

[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_03]: to chop this thing. Zoe you ended up voting for Naliyah to win

[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_03]: correct instead of a sepia so it seems like so Rob get ready I'm giving you a look I'm ready

[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_01]: couple of fun memories that I have of you on the show Zoe and first of all you guys need

[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Zoe was the hardest worker out there she never sat down she never stopped I mean there's nothing

[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_01]: that Zoe can't do and she was such a good provider always took care of people you know

[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_01]: made us bracelets made us shell necklaces just always just like so so thoughtful and it was

[00:50:54] [SPEAKER_01]: so nice having someone like that out there on our tribe during that time you just were so

[00:50:59] [SPEAKER_01]: loving and caring never had anything bad to say about anybody um you just worked so hard

[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_01]: anyways I just love you to pieces a couple of fun stories I wanted to share do you remember when we

[00:51:09] [SPEAKER_01]: first landed on row two and we were all laying together that night side by side obviously we

[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_01]: didn't have a shelter we had no blankets and pillows I think we're sleeping on life jackets

[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and we had heard that there were pigs around and so we were all laying there one night we

[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_01]: heard us rustling in the bushes and we're like oh my gosh you guys the pigs have arrived

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_01]: at our camp we all got our machetes well we had two machetes so we got our two machetes

[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and started like walking through the bush to see if we could kill them so that we could have food

[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_01]: to eat and we went over to this bush and was like chopping around a little bit and then we

[00:51:44] [SPEAKER_01]: found the boom pole from the camera guy's microphone and it was even fuzzy and we just

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_01]: laughed and laughed about that I still love that memory I love that we thought as soon as

[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_01]: we got out to survivor that we were just going to you know have pigs come walking into our

[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_01]: camp that easily that we're gonna like just be able to kill them and eat that was we were so

[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_01]: naive weren't we but you know what we put it out there in the universe and guess what it never

[00:52:10] [SPEAKER_01]: happened so it's fine okay the other thing I wanted to talk about so after the tribe swapped

[00:52:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and Kathy and Pasco and I got sent over to Marahamu we had a challenge so it was the

[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_01]: first challenge that we were ever able to like be back together again um with each other

[00:52:27] [SPEAKER_01]: you and I were put at a station at the relay and we were waiting for our turn in the relay and

[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I looked over to you and I was like Zoe are we are you guys gonna throw a challenge so that

[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_01]: we can get them out and get row two back together and you never said anything to me

[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_01]: oh my gosh I heard it I knew then I was like honestly everybody says it was a coconut

[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_01]: challenge that like solidified everything but I have to say you were the first person that

[00:52:53] [SPEAKER_01]: put doubt into my mind and I'm glad you didn't lie to me imagine if you would have lied to me or

[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_01]: imagine if you guys were thrown the challenge maybe how different the game would have turned

[00:53:02] [SPEAKER_01]: out but anyway that was kind of a cool moment that never was on camera that always stuck with

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_01]: me I love you I miss your face I cannot wait to listen to this podcast and catch up with

[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_04]: amazing like she was going through like this grass it would cut your legs and she would never

[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_04]: complained she would climb trees like I couldn't for some reason I couldn't get up the tree and

[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_04]: she said well I'll get up there give me a boost and and we were looking for breadfruit

[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_04]: and you know she was just so amazing and so willing to like just be out there and do stuff

[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_04]: and I like I was probably doing I don't know I should have just stayed at camp more and

[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_07]: out chatted more yeah um Zoe so one of the things uh from the jury when you all uh showed

[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_07]: up at the final tribal council everybody was wearing black for the final tribal council was

[00:55:00] [SPEAKER_07]: there a meeting about uh hey what do you think about this look that will go to the final tribal

[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_07]: council wearing even Jeff noticed oh the fi the jurors are wearing black tonight whoa

[00:55:13] [SPEAKER_04]: there was this sort of um I remember something being said that you know we got to be serious

[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_04]: here no more you know this like we're the we're the judge and we're the judges now we're

[00:55:28] [SPEAKER_04]: remember Pascal was the judge oh okay yeah Pascal was a judge you were the jury a jury that's right

[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_04]: we that's right that we were just I remember we were getting you know because now we're

[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_04]: the jury and we're able to have like clothes on that aren't you know the same clothes

[00:55:49] [SPEAKER_04]: we've been wearing for 39 days or 27 days or however many days um

[00:55:56] [SPEAKER_04]: there was just we were just supposed to be very serious about it and I can't I just I

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_04]: don't know I sort of lost track of what that was all about but you know so sorry yeah brain

[00:56:12] [SPEAKER_03]: crap that's okay Zoe what did you send in for your audition video

[00:56:19] [SPEAKER_04]: uh let's see here that was I was working on a calendar with a friend of mine who actually lives

[00:56:25] [SPEAKER_04]: in New York um about lobster fishing and like all of my mantras and she was amazing lady to

[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_04]: work with and she helped me do the video and it was um I don't think I ever saw the last

[00:56:38] [SPEAKER_04]: final cut because I was working and she took all of this footage and and made it and and

[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_04]: was able to send it in but it was all about just working outdoors and and lobster fishing and um

[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I honestly I never saw the final cut so we this is a great way to to wind down our

[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_03]: interview I'm glad you mentioned your calendar so if I'm not mistaken wasn't there a nude

[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_03]: shot of you in this calendar uh well and you brought one with CBS to the early show and you

[00:57:16] [SPEAKER_03]: gave them one and I don't know if you looked at your own calendar but there was a nude shot

[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_03]: in there of you do you have any these calendars left Zoe I think I have one left

[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_04]: it was it was a very it I mean it was my dad tasteful yes it was

[00:57:37] [SPEAKER_04]: and sometimes out here on Monhegan you can go out on the rock somewhere on a beautiful day when it's

[00:57:44] [SPEAKER_04]: sunny and and you know get some extra vitamins D in places where you might not get vitamin D

[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_04]: you know like through your epidermis you know so sometimes I would do that and I was I guess

[00:57:58] [SPEAKER_04]: you know it's just part of my um part of my my life you know like I'm sure all of us would

[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_04]: gone you know skinny dipping in the marquesas if the sharks weren't so prevalent

[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not judging at all but you've got one calendar left you auction that off you might

[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_03]: can take a summer off no oh I don't it's not that I mean I'm not saying it wasn't a

[00:58:25] [SPEAKER_04]: uh an amazing um uh production and like it was I was so happy to be able to I mean I

[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_04]: had 10,000 of them printed up and I sold them um and and you know did uh fundraising things

[00:58:40] [SPEAKER_04]: with them and stuff like that it was it was near and dear to my heart because I don't

[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_04]: really lobster fish um I go out with my old captain or whatever um I'm not fishing

[00:58:54] [SPEAKER_04]: by myself now with my own boat so it's nice to have those memories because I did that for

[00:58:59] [SPEAKER_04]: 20 years and I said oh I gotta gotta do something else so so now I do other than us getting you
