[00:03:54] It's this idea that initially she has this hardened exterior.

[00:03:57] You take a look at her on the outside and you're like, wow, she presents this very stately presence,

[00:04:02] is able to make a lot of magic happen.

[00:04:04] But you explore a little bit more of her behind the scenes and underneath that green skin,

[00:04:08] perhaps that purple edit.

[00:04:09] There's a human underneath.

[00:04:11] And, you know, we'll be ending this season quite literally for good next week.

[00:04:17] And unfortunately, they're not endgame material.

[00:04:24] for our traditional pre-finale podcast as we are ready to go.

[00:04:30] How are you feeling going into the Survivor 47 finale?

[00:04:33] It's really interesting because, of course, this is a time,

[00:04:37] as is usually the case with the end of the year anyway,

[00:04:39] to kind of take a look back at what we've been experiencing for the past now 13 weeks

[00:04:44] with this extra week added on.

[00:04:46] And there's always also been a lot of discourse,

[00:04:49] especially now that we're earring the end of the season.

[00:04:51] And to Chappelle's point, we're starting to, some of us at least,

[00:04:54] put the cart before the horse and say like,

[00:04:56] all right, when Rachel wins, how do we look back on her victory on this season?

[00:05:00] And it's really interesting comparing this to the other season we got in 2024.

[00:05:06] First off, I will say,

[00:05:08] low-key, and maybe this is setting up for a podcast we'll do in the winter offseason,

[00:05:13] of 2024 might be one of the best calendar year for Survivor seasons.

[00:05:19] Okay.

[00:05:20] In recent memory.

[00:05:21] I mean, listen, we've got 46, 47, and Australian Survivor Titans v. Rebels.

[00:05:26] That's tough to beat in the 2020s at least.

[00:05:29] We ate this year, Chappelle.

[00:05:31] Yeah, feasted even.

[00:05:32] You know, I'm very excited to talk about this year in Survivor

[00:05:36] because everything Mike is talking about is true.

[00:05:38] You know, the Australian Survivor.

[00:05:41] I didn't even watch Australian Survivor.

[00:05:43] And everyone was talking about it so much, I was like,

[00:05:45] okay, I got to check it out.

[00:05:46] And I was like, wow, this is crazy.

[00:05:48] And you would think those high highs would be so hard to reach.

[00:05:52] And don't get me wrong, I don't know if they were all reached to here,

[00:05:55] but we definitely have some great editing in season 47 that made you say,

[00:05:59] man, it's like they looked at Survivor and said,

[00:06:01] we've been doing the same thing for so long.

[00:06:03] If we switch it up in just these little small spots,

[00:06:05] then we could do all this other good stuff with it.

[00:06:08] It makes some great TV.

[00:06:10] The editing has been crazy.

[00:06:11] The flashbacks, the different scenes where they're thinking back to other people

[00:06:17] and who we haven't seen, because Sean's all over the season.

[00:06:19] It's crazy.

[00:06:20] They did it.

[00:06:21] And I've been just enjoying them having fun with the show

[00:06:24] and what it could be because we like the Survivor strategy.

[00:06:27] That's why we come to watch the show, but make it interesting.

[00:06:30] And I think they've done a really good job this year.

[00:06:31] Yeah, so that's what's been so interesting to me

[00:06:33] is really comparing these two seasons.

[00:06:36] Obviously, I think people are going to have their preferences

[00:06:39] as to whether they enjoy the more character, drama, humor-filled stuff in season 46

[00:06:46] or whether you enjoy maybe some of the more complicated strategy-forward stuff in season 47.

[00:06:51] I say this with no maligning towards season 46,

[00:06:54] but also I don't think it's completely out of pocket to say that I think season 47

[00:06:57] has had an accelerated level of gameplay beyond not only season 46,

[00:07:02] but maybe anything we had seen in the new era.

[00:07:04] And I think it's almost like when we had another great calendar year of Survivor,

[00:07:09] which was Co-Wrong and Millennials vs. Gen X in the same season, actually,

[00:07:13] where it was like, here is this wacky, over-the-top,

[00:07:17] I-can't-believe-this-just-happened Survivor season

[00:07:20] that feels like a fever dream.

[00:07:21] In fact, some people passed out from fever in the process.

[00:07:24] And then here's this more nuanced, very three-dimensional tackling of human dynamics

[00:07:32] and big strategic complexity that's contained there.

[00:07:35] And it's almost like choosing, for me, between chocolate and candy

[00:07:37] versus what your sweets are.

[00:07:39] But I also do wonder when it comes to season 47,

[00:07:42] because I've been reviewing my notes.

[00:07:44] Rob, I know you re-watched the premiere in anticipation for this week.

[00:07:47] I wonder if seasons like Survivor 46 are kind of remembered as a whole.

[00:07:54] I wonder if we're going to look back on Survivor 47 as the sum of its parts,

[00:07:58] where I was looking through all the stuff that happened,

[00:08:01] a lot of stuff happened in Survivor 47, stuff that I forgot about.

[00:08:05] Remember the Survivor social hour where they did a half-mergatory,

[00:08:09] and then they did the actual not-mergatory-mergatory in the very next round?

[00:08:13] Remember things like, remember when John Lovett hit podcaster extraordinaire,

[00:08:19] was on the show for three days, a month before the election came out?

[00:08:23] That feels, for some reason, ages ago,

[00:08:25] because I think that we've seen these characters and storylines

[00:08:28] kind of come in in fits and starts.

[00:08:30] And getting to remember back through this season

[00:08:32] as sort of a catalog of moments

[00:08:34] has been a really interesting way of processing the story

[00:08:38] as compared to 46 or 45,

[00:08:39] which I feel were a little bit more cohesive.

[00:08:42] Yeah, that's interesting.

[00:08:44] So I wonder if that ties into our discussion

[00:08:47] of how this season comes to an end,

[00:08:51] because it does feel like that we are headed towards

[00:08:54] a Rachel win coming up on Wednesday night.

[00:08:58] I think that probably just about any fan feels like

[00:09:00] that that's the most likely scenario.

[00:09:02] And of course, you know, things can happen

[00:09:04] and people that we thought were likely winners

[00:09:06] didn't end up winning.

[00:09:08] But that's how it seems like it's going.

[00:09:10] One of the things I had said that I had wanted to do

[00:09:13] coming into this podcast night was

[00:09:15] I had wanted to go back and watch the premiere of Survivor 47.

[00:09:21] Is that because of the name drop of the podcast?

[00:09:22] Which also, remember when that happened?

[00:09:24] Remember when Rob had a podcast on national television?

[00:09:27] Remember Asia?

[00:09:28] Yeah, I do remember that that happened.

[00:09:30] But no, it was not to go back and hear

[00:09:33] the words Rob's podcast said on Survivor by Asia.

[00:09:37] I mean, but it was so cool that it happened, Rob.

[00:09:40] It was cool that it happened, Rob.

[00:09:41] It wasn't a little jarring that I was like,

[00:09:42] oh yeah, remember this?

[00:09:43] This happened.

[00:09:45] That's the thing.

[00:09:46] When the season started off,

[00:09:47] we had such high hopes for the season

[00:09:49] because we had our people on there,

[00:09:51] Andy's on there, Asia's on there.

[00:09:52] There's an RHAP on the show.

[00:09:54] We're like, what is this?

[00:09:55] What are we doing?

[00:09:56] And then it just evolves into something

[00:09:58] that I don't think any of us could have foreseen happen.

[00:10:00] I mean, they cut Asia, her story time short here

[00:10:05] on Survivor 47.

[00:10:06] And I thought, I'm not going to like this.

[00:10:08] I can't watch this season again.

[00:10:10] I legit was like, if I ever watch the episode again,

[00:10:12] it'll be too soon.

[00:10:13] It's not happening.

[00:10:14] But now I'm like, man, this season is actually really good.

[00:10:18] I feel like you had to get rid of Asia

[00:10:19] in order to let these other people flourish.

[00:10:21] Let these other people breathe a little bit.

[00:10:23] Yeah, because she would have just

[00:10:24] stuck all the air off their neck, Asia.

[00:10:26] Yeah, her power, her power.

[00:10:28] Because it would have been the story of RHAP all season.

[00:10:31] But instead, we got so many other compelling stories as well.

[00:10:34] I think Mike's right.

[00:10:35] This one's going to go down in the books

[00:10:37] for why Survivor is so great.

[00:10:39] I've seen people talking about Survivor 47

[00:10:41] that I've never seen talking about Survivor before.

[00:10:44] I didn't know anybody was like,

[00:10:45] the people outside this community,

[00:10:47] they're just like, hey, have you seen the Survivor show?

[00:10:49] This is so good.

[00:10:50] This is the perfect time to jump in.

[00:10:51] My new motion on Blue Sky that everyone can join me in on

[00:10:54] is trying to bully Alan Seppenwall

[00:10:56] into catching up on Survivor.

[00:10:58] Oh, wow.

[00:12:10] I had a couple of interesting takeaways

[00:12:12] from my rewatch.

[00:12:13] Actually, I teased this in a podcast

[00:12:15] that I did over the weekend

[00:12:16] with Drew Basile.

[00:12:17] That was a great podcast.

[00:12:18] A lot of nice feedback

[00:12:19] that came in on that one

[00:12:21] if you have not heard that podcast yet.

[00:12:23] But I was really interested

[00:12:25] because I have been thinking about this of,

[00:12:28] I feel like that Rachel the player

[00:12:31] we have come to know well

[00:12:32] in the post-merge game.

[00:12:34] But Rachel the person,

[00:12:36] Mike, I feel like has been

[00:12:37] very underdefined by the show.

[00:12:41] I mean, I don't disagree.

[00:12:43] I don't know if that should necessarily

[00:12:45] be in a feather and a cap of,

[00:12:47] oh, he's not going,

[00:12:48] she's not going to win at this point.

[00:12:49] Because even looking at last season,

[00:12:51] I mean, Kelsey,

[00:12:52] Kenzie's sort of like tragic backstory

[00:12:54] of that she has basically been a hustler

[00:12:57] since she was 18 years old

[00:12:58] also didn't come up for the finale.

[00:13:00] And that was also,

[00:13:02] could have arguably

[00:13:03] either been something extraneous

[00:13:05] or they had to put it in

[00:13:06] because that was a large key indicator

[00:13:09] as to why certain people gave her the win.

[00:13:12] So I don't think it's necessarily

[00:13:13] something to write her off entirely.

[00:13:16] I mean, I would also say like even Sam,

[00:13:18] like Sam gets a little bit of stuff

[00:13:19] at the beginning with the glue guy

[00:13:20] in the premiere.

[00:13:22] But for all we know,

[00:13:23] it could happen, you know,

[00:13:24] later on that Rachel talks about,

[00:13:25] I think what going,

[00:13:26] growing up in Beijing,

[00:13:27] I think with her family

[00:13:29] or something like that.

[00:13:30] She, that she told me in the preseason

[00:13:31] that we'll just have

[00:13:32] two hours in the, in the finale.

[00:13:35] We got plenty of time.

[00:13:36] Okay. So, well, let me go say,

[00:13:38] I went back and I watched this

[00:13:39] and in the new era in particular,

[00:13:41] I think really through all the seasons,

[00:13:43] the winner is always present

[00:13:47] in either the confessionals

[00:13:49] that happen on the way into the show.

[00:13:52] And we heard like in, in going back,

[00:13:54] I was paying very close attention to this.

[00:13:56] We hear voiceover at the start of the season.

[00:13:58] I think Gabe gets the first voiceover.

[00:14:01] You don't see his face,

[00:14:03] but he says that he wants to be

[00:14:04] one of the faces on the Mount Rushmore

[00:14:06] of the new era.

[00:14:07] I think you hear, you hear Asia

[00:14:08] talking about,

[00:14:09] as you're going to forge her new path.

[00:14:10] And then, then we cut to, you know,

[00:14:13] then we see people on the boat.

[00:14:16] The first confessional we see

[00:14:19] of the people coming in on the boat,

[00:14:22] Chappelle is Sam.

[00:14:24] I'm going to be a wolf

[00:14:25] in wolf's clothing out here.

[00:14:27] And I said at the time,

[00:14:28] that's a winner quote.

[00:14:29] That's, that's a, that's a winner quote,

[00:14:31] you know, and I think he's not wrong.

[00:14:34] I think, you know, for, for us,

[00:14:36] people are starting to say,

[00:14:58] and some of the other people

[00:14:59] that we just haven't learned about Rachel.
