Survivor enters its electrifying 51st season, and host Rob Cesternino sits down with legendary host Jeff Probst to reveal everything that makes this new “Open Era” so unpredictable and exciting. From casting secrets to the wild twists inspired by Survivor’s own history, Rob and Jeff leave no stone unturned as they break down why Season 51 is unlike any Survivor you’ve seen before. Find out how the aftermath of Survivor 50’s chaos set the stage for an era where anything can happen—especially with a cast shaped for bold moves and wild gameplay.
Rob welcomes Jeff Probst for an in-depth premiere chat as they dig into the show’s biggest evolution yet. Jeff shares how the production team drew inspiration from Survivor’s “treasure chest” of legendary moments, opening the floodgates for fan-favorite (and brand-new) twists. They discuss the casting process, moving away from stereotype archetypes to focus on truly compelling personalities and critical thinkers, and how players are now all but pushed to “play to win, not just not to lose.” The stakes are higher than ever, with an odd-numbered starting tribe and a raft twist at marooning keeping everyone guessing. Plus, Jeff dishes on past mistakes (hello, “Change History”) and why taking risks is part of what makes Survivor endure.
– Jeff Probst explains how the Open Era lets each new season draw from 50 seasons of gameplay and twists
– Rob breaks down how Survivor 51’s cast was chosen for unpredictability—no more casting for “the mom” or “the hero”
– Jeff compares the vibe of Season 50’s wild ride to the new expectations for gameplay fun and risk-taking
– Learn the real reasoning behind tribe splits and why a 21-player marooning sets the stage for uncertainty
– Insight into what Jeff considers Survivor’s worst twist—and what he’s learned from the backlash
With Survivor 51’s Open Era in full swing, the question looms: Who will seize this chance to play big and play their own way, and what surprises are still hidden in the treasure chest of Survivor history? Tune in as Rob and Jeff debate whether fun or fearlessness will shape the next Sole Survivor.

[00:01:08] [SPEAKER_06] I know you have a fucking show, but we need that today. I want to be on the- I like being on this side of the drive.
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_05] I told Jeff, like, you have to sit in your chair. I don't want to get, like, the Rome treatment. I'm gonna get voted out of this thing when we're gonna sit here. This is a mad poop. If anybody should be sitting in that chair, didn't you? Ah, thank you so much. But how about this?
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_07] Did you all know you were gonna see Jeff Probst today? I- What, Mr. Eric? Thank you.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_06] Well, I'm really happy to be here. We are sumo-pumped for this premiere and really happy to have Sussmanino here to do a little hangout.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_05] You know, here's what's incredible about Jeff. Um, this is year 26 of Survivor. Oh! And here he is to be out here to get everybody hyped up about season 51 of the show. Yeah. Literally, the 51st time that he's saying, like, okay, here we are. We're gonna go out here and get everybody excited. And he still is excited to do it.
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_06] Yeah. No, I still love it. I mean, I feel like my enthusiasm comes across on the show. I hope it does. Like, it's not manufactured. I still love doing this. I still love a new group of players. This group, 51, phenomenal. But just seeing people willing to show up and say, I'm gonna give it a shot.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_05] And I also get from you, you're really excited about what this is about to be. The open era. I feel it that you feel like, okay, this is something new. It's something that you're excited to do with the show.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_06] Yeah. Well, the idea of when 50 ended or when we were building 50, we knew we were gonna throw everything at it. Once fans started voting and it came in like they want advantages, they want idols. And we just said, we're going big. Yeah. And the thing we said to the Survivor of 50 players was, if you birth this kind of chaos, then we'll take it into 51. And if you don't, we'll do it on our own.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_06] But they did. And it was really the way they attacked the game that made us feel like, I think we can have a bigger idea and let players just go.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_05] So you talked a lot about going into the new era and even like a little bit into the new era about your ideas. You think a lot about, okay, what is the new era about? What is this like? And you had the white boards and everything. You and my wife came in and said, no, no, there should be this. When did you know that the open era was the thing? That was going to be the follow-up. Right.
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_06] Well, so I was sitting in my office and thinking, just kind of big picture thinking, where does Survivor need to go now? Where should it go? And so the first thing I did is I thought, I'm going to think of Survivor like a company. What's our biggest asset that we can utilize? And almost immediately I went, oh, it's our history. That's our biggest asset because every man knows our history. So we are all in and together.
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_06] And very quickly, it just was like, oh, it's a treasure chest. And it's full of every single thing we've ever done in 25 years and 50 seasons of Survivor. And what's fun is anybody can reach in and say, I'd like a little of this from season two. Oh, season seven had a fuck twist. I don't need to wear advantage. No, actually I do. So it doesn't matter. Every season is independent. So 51 is what it was.
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_06] 52 has nothing to do with 51 or 53. It's its own thing. So like I was saying to Rob, really, I should be able to pull one of you out of the audience and say, here's the metaphor of the treasure chest. What do you want in the show? What advantages do you want? How many advantages do you want? Do you want idols on the beaches? Do you want them to find them with a clue? Do you want it to be a beware advantage? Do you want no idols? Do you want different idols on each beach? It doesn't matter. That's what's fun.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_06] And I'm telling you, the group of 51 players, when I tell them at the beginning of the show, I was like, well, I think we like it. Will they like it? It was like it was like a group of surfers. And I was saying, good news, bad news. Good news is the waves are in. Bad news is they are the biggest waves in the history of your life. And the players knew it was dangerous and they were reaching for their boards at the same time.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_05] I feel like in the takeaway from season 50, I felt like that Rick Devins was such a big part of the story of season 50. And I thought this was sort of just my armchair, you know, trying to put myself in your head was that the way that Rick played. And there was so much talk about the joy and he went for it and he flipped the coin and he said, I don't know if this is going to work.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_05] I'm going to try it anyway. It felt like to me that maybe that's sort of like the attitude that you're hoping to see the players take on in the open era.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_06] You hit it on the head. You really did. And they did. And it's not hype. You'll see the premiere is Wednesday. It's really fun. But you will see that enthusiasm. And really the idea is, and maybe you've heard me say this, we think of Survivor like a triangle. There's three pieces to it. You're either the producer, you're the player, or you're the fan. But it takes all three of us.
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_06] And so because the fandom is so actively engaged and not a passive audience, it makes making Survivor fun because either you're going to play or you're going to watch or maybe one day you'll play and go back to watching. But it's so it makes it easy to build the show. And then for Survivor 51, we said to our casting team led by Jesse Tannenbaum, you thought 50 was tough. 51 has to be one of the greatest casts we've ever had.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_06] And that was the goal. And you can ask the players. We had a little cheat sheet. And the cheat sheet was we would go through a casting, which is a very long process. And all along, we're keeping notes. And one of the notes was 51. And 51 meant they should get 51 because 51 has to be great. This cast is really great. And they came to play.
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_06] And they're, I think, 53 after they watch 51 will realize that's the way to play is play to have fun and play to win. Don't play to lose. You're going to lose. 19 to 20 people lose. So that your advantage is to accept the fact you've already lost, whether it's tonight or tomorrow night or next week. And instead, sit back. You know, when you could sit back out of pocket and play, play better.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_05] Well, I think that that's just such a powerful lesson for like how we should all be living is that like, hey, most of what we are going to do, like, it's probably not going to work. But they try to optimize for having fun in what you're doing that even if it doesn't work. At least it was a good story. Yeah, I did the thing that was the most fun. Yes. And for these are, I think that that is a regret for a lot of people who go on reality TV. I try to optimize too much.
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_05] And I didn't just do the thing that was going to make me smile.
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_06] Well, and there's another element that's unique to Survivor. And that is there's no influence from outside world. The players decide who wins. And today's player, I feel pretty confident. The majority of them come to play. So if you're a player and you come to not lose, even if you get to the final, you're never getting their vote. They just don't respect it because they played to win. They took a bigger risk. They wanted to flip the coin, whatever that is. So it's in your best interest to play that way anyway.
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_06] It's the only way to win.
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_05] So I'm assuming you had the concept of what the open air is going to be before you had the cast. Was there anything particular they were looking for from this cast that was going to come into play following up from season 50?
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_06] It's a good question. No. The way we used to cast Survivor, like in the early days, when you were one of the OGs, it was different. The conscripted world was different. Survivor was a brand new format. You're still figuring it out. And we would look for archetypes. We need the mom. We need the hero. We need the whatever. We don't do that anymore. We don't. I don't even pay attention. I half the time don't know somebody's last name or where they're from.
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_06] I only know how they make me feel when they're in front of me. And it's something that you can try to outsmart us in casting. It just doesn't work. We had a really good team and a lot of psychologists. The best and only approach is to say, this is who I am. This is what I think. And this is how I feel. And this is how I've been played. There's not a right or wrong answer. So what we look for is our compelling individuals.
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_06] And to be clear, you don't have to have a story of, I lost my family at sea in a boat. No. Sometimes we tell those stories because they're interesting and relevant to the person. But sometimes Charlie didn't have that story. There was a kid who, like gifted kid, went to Harvard and all this stuff. And he goes, hey, that's going to be my obstacle. And people are going to look at me and say, you've already had all the great things in life. And he still got to the end.
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_05] Yeah. Now he has his adversity is that I got screwed by the jury. Where is he?
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_07] Yeah.
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_05] One of the things that I noticed with this cast going through looking at everybody, there's three people that have a background as farmers. And I feel like that that's very unlike the people that were cast in the new era. And I wondered if, was there any sort of a focus on trying to get a little bit more focused on people trying to provide in the camp and the survival elements?
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_06] Is that something? No. I love these questions because you make me realize maybe we should be looking at these things. We really don't. I'm not just saying this. I have my own cheat sheet. Every producer has theirs. But mine is really simple. Yeah. Would I like to talk to them at Tribal Council? Would I like them as a winner of our game? And if those two things were a yes, then I'm already pretty far down the road.
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_06] And I just can't keep saying it enough. You can't try to please us in casting. You don't know why I'd want to talk to you. So don't worry about it. Just be you. And chances are, I do want to talk to you. Like with you. We just asked Rob to do this 10 minutes ago. And you're deep into this interview. You don't need any help.
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_07] You're compelling. You got the point of view? Look at what you can do.
[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_05] You're half. You call it the open era. It's not the everything era. It's not the... Why open? Why that word?
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_06] It's a really good question because you're trying to brand something. And I was sitting in my office for a few days. And Quigley and I, one of our key creative guys, we had started working on this treasure chest idea. And he got very excited. And he knows the show better than I do. And he's like, you know, we could do this. We could do this. We haven't used the helicopter in a while. We could do this. And then one day, I don't know why open era, but it's like the other day somebody was interviewing me and they said, you know, when you say once again,
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_06] immunity is back up for grabs and it's redundant. And I said, yes, I know. And he goes, so why? And I go, it just sounded good to me. It just sounded rhythmically. It just kind of sounded that way. To me, the open era, I could see it. I could see it on a poster. I could hear myself saying it on the marooning of the boat versus the everything era. Everything era. It doesn't really work. Just personal opinion.
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_05] It's not right or wrong. Jeff, do you have a part of Survivor that's your favorite part of it? Like when you're actually done through the filming of the season? Hmm.
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_06] I like, I guess my favorite part. My favorite part is either the Q&As we do before Challenge, which don't always air, but sometimes if there's risk in there that it does. Or it's tribal. Yeah. And not tribal like who's going to be going home. It's tribal when you find something. You discover a moment inside of the climax of the show that reveals character.
[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_06] Because that's when I feel like the players are really, you know, feeling it. And as you know, it gets to a point where if you have a relationship with a player, like I'm looking at Kilby, and Kilby's going to be doing this all season, is the first happening thing. But I could almost look at Kilby and send him a unconscious direction of, I'm coming to you. And I'm over here talking to you. And I'm like, I said, Kilby, you've been doing this thing all night. Here's what I want to know.
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_06] Now you're getting into like personality and character, which is what the show's about and will either help Kilby or kill Kilby, depending on how it goes. But it's, it's, or it's important to the show.
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_05] The new era was about small tribes, nowhere to hide that. I don't know if this is canon. I feel like I've seen commercials where they're showing two tribes, right? And that's exciting. Where are we excited? That makes sense. That's funny. What's challenging for you about that, two tribes versus three tribes?
[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_06] The reason we liked three tribes and did it for quite a while is very simple. Six players on a tribe, or seven if you win with 21, is dangerous. And 10 players on a tribe, you know, if you're clever, you can probably kick back and go, I ain't going to be first out. Probably. So that makes the storytelling a little more difficult. You've got 10 players, you've got to figure out your red herrings. But what's really fun is we may do two tribes this season.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_06] We may do two tribes for the next 10 years. We may never do two tribes again. The players won't know. And the beginning of this show, they don't know. And we don't care about gender division anymore. We don't, we're not doing tribes based on nine men, nine women. We're doing tribes based on what we think are even. So if we end up with 12 women and nine men or 11 women and 10 men, it doesn't matter. Who's the most interesting people? Let's put them out there. Let them figure it out. So all of that is really, really common.
[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_05] 21 players to start. This is very unusual to start with an odd number here. Have you made that decision of, you had 24 in season 50, but normally it's been 18,
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_06] sometimes 20. Why 21? Well, 24 is, I think the max we could ever do based on the math and having a 26 day shoot schedule. 21 was because we had, we really did have 21 players with a 51 next to that. And we just went, let's go to 21. And then 21 now makes you say, okay, so what are we going to do? What are we going to do? So then we purposefully put four rafts on the marooning. So now the players are looking around going, two, three, five, 21,
[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_06] four rafts. What is happening? Is it three tribes to seven? Is it four tribes to five? Cause there's four rafts. That's what the open era gives you is. It could be all of that. And so when they hit the beat to the opening moments, even though you've seen the trailer and you're a little ahead of them, they weren't there. They weren't, they didn't know two tribes. They didn't know anything. That's what's really fun about, I can't say it enough. It's the idea that it could literally be anything.
[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_05] Means it could be anything. Season 50 had so much excitement that everybody, I feel like that survivor had like this, like a palpable enthusiasm week after week during survivor. How did you experience that? Just in terms of the mania around the survivor 50.
[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_06] It was exciting. It was truly exhilarating. Cause I talked to a lot of fans during the 15 and I felt the genuine joy. It was also overwhelming. And for perspective, this is not a woe is me. This is just for perspective. The first time I wrote anything down about survivor 50 was in June of 2023. And the show finished in may of 2026.
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_06] So that was a three year. That's how big we felt 50 was and how much we knew our fans were like, you better have something good and not just a returning player season. So we really spent a ton of time with new twists and trying to push it as far as we could and watch the player saying, this is what they would say every morning. If you talk to anybody from 50, by the way, all the players who are here are alumni and 51. How great is that? It's scary. Oh,
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_06] nice to play. And I'm showing. But if you talk to anybody who played in 50, every time they saw me every morning, they, somebody would say something along the lines of, what do you got for us today? And that's what you want to hear as a producer. That's who we want to be on survivor. Cause guess what? We got something. It's called double duo. Two of you're going home tonight,
[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_06] but that's what it was like. And then you lose great players, but yeah, we have great players on 50 every week. We love every week. We cry after travel. Oh, Colby's gone now. Oh man.
[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_05] That's why it was good. What about for you? The shift between, okay, now I just did survivor 50. And then here's all these people. They played all these different seasons before. And then you are back with now new players. Yeah. Like, does that change anything about the way that you approach hosting? Yeah.
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_06] With 50, it was 50. I kind of felt like I was part of the club. Like I grew up with some of you, like guys like Colby and Jenna. I mean, I grew, I learned the show as they were learning it. They were teaching me. So yeah, I felt this kinship that we're in. We're all in on this. That's why I did ridiculous things like rap. I know I can't rap, but I just wanted people to know I got skin in the game too.
[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_06] I'm willing to be ridiculous and vulnerable and all that stuff. 51, the hosting job is completely different. My job now is to discover who you are. I saw you in casting. I've seen you for months, but I've never seen you in the jungle. And you know, 51 seasons in, it's easy to forget the jungle's real. It's not a backdrop. You know, it's very difficult to weather a storm like 51. They get a storm one night and it's tough. And you,
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_06] you can see that the next morning and they're beat up and they're tired and their skin is prinkly, but they're still smiling. So my job is the witness to it all. Right.
[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_05] A few of these people, I think they were on the fence if they were going to watch survivor 15 gone, right? This guy right here. He told me he wasn't sure he was going to watch, but are you convinced now? Wait, really?
[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_06] Wow. I like the arms crossed. No, no, no. I'll see.
[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_07] But you're here. What the fuck are you here? No, but you know,
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_06] this is actually one of the best parts of the survivor audiences. You all will have, you all will tell me when you face like change history. Gross. Really bad. I get it. But that's what makes it fun. We think of the show like this, by the way, I think you're going to watch episode two, three, four, five. It's a great season. What? Just to say, this is how we treat survivor. When Mark gave us the show years ago,
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_06] he said, just go have fun. We think a survivor like this really fragile glass ball that fits in the palm of your hand. And I certainly don't want to be responsible for breaking the glass ball, but with a show like survivor, you have to be willing to throw that ball up in the air. I just hope you catch it. And most of the time we catch it. Sometimes we don't and it drops. And then you glue it back together. What's great is you all, with the exception of him,
[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_06] on the map every season and watch again. And we appreciate that. That's why we're still on the air. 26 years later.
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_05] Jeff, the energy, the enthusiasm that you have for this. It's just so remarkable that you put so much of your life and your soul into this and keeping this thing going. I say this about you is that I wish the people that ran all of our institutions cared as much about what they do. That's not what you do. So thank you. Because it gives so much to all of us.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_05] And so thank you. You're such a great caretaker of this thing. And you're going to watch Survivor 51. Give it up for Jeff Brobs. Oh, it's really long.
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_07] I didn't know. I said,
[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_05] I didn't know I was going to get to sit down and talk with you.
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_06] I really,
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_05] I didn't know this either until about 345. You know, what a day. What do we do now? They gave me the wrap up sign. So it's your move. Okay.
[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_06] I'm not in charge. Yes. Question. Okay. One question.
[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_03] You said sometimes the glass ball drops. What's your, in your mind, like the worst mistake you've made? Or like something that didn't work out.
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_06] Right. What she's asking when, when I say sometimes the glass ball drops, what's the worst example, the best example of dropping in? It's a really good question. You already said that hourglass. So I would say like the change history is probably the best example. And part of the reason is I had happy, the name change history, not innovative or revelatory. But for me, it was like change history.
[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_06] That really be interesting to do in a game where something's already happened. If you could go backwards. But every time I would start working on it, I go, this is a terrible idea. The point of the game is they decide. And then that's it. 41 comes around and COVID hits. And we have time to think I'm in my garage. I got five whiteboards in my, change history. It's time. There was no reason. I knew it was a bad idea and I shoved it into the show.
[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_06] And then I remember the reaction. I was like, I'm in quicksand. And we already got it on the schedule for 42. So we've got, I'm going to do this twice. So I think that was one where as a leader, I realized I got, I got excited about something that I did not pressure test. Like we usually pressure test. And I'm sure our team was like, I don't know. He wants to do a change history. I did. And I said, that's two words. He really wants to do it. And then it happens. And I'm like,
[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_06] yeah, we kind of thought it was risky, but you know, but you get through it. And people hated it, but they didn't find it as much the second time. But what I will say, what it did also remind me is there was one or two players who were really upset about it. I see you. They're really upset about it. And I do remember saying and thinking, you cannot like something that happens on Survivor or in your life, but you can't control that.
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_06] What you can control is having agency over how you respond to it. So I think those players messed up by saying, I'm going to be disgruntled for a couple of days. dude, the game is slipping past you. You should get over that shit right now. Be mad at me later. Stay in your pocket. All right. We got, we have one more question though. Yes. Yeah. Well done.
[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_03] From all you know from Survivor in the past seasons, who do you think would win Big Brother? The Survivor player D or the Survivor player Daniel?
[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_05] Wow. This is, this is a really good question. That is great. Have you kept up with any of this? By the way, who saw Jeff Probst on Big Brother this season? That was not my bingo card. That's a really good question. So let me, let me tell you where we are. Somehow there's five people left. D and Devins are both there. It's crazy. Thank you for that update. Yes.
[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_06] I know. So I owe you until Sunday. You know, but I appreciate it.
[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_05] Yes. And somehow that they've managed to, a number of times they were in danger. They came through. Wow. I, there's, I'd say probably better than 50% chance. One of them is going to win this thing.
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_07] Yeah.
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_05] I love, and also what that, I think D might cut Devins at some point. I don't think he, I don't, he, and he is very much like, he'll never turn his back on his ally. But I think D might, D might do like what she did with, you know, with Austin. It could be a blind side. Yeah.
[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_06] Okay. Okay. I would just say a nod to our casting team, because rarely do we take somebody from another show and put them on Survivor, maybe twice in our history. People take Survivor players and put them on their show all the time. No wonder they wanted Devins and D. They're super competitive, but who I would put my money on? Maybe because D is one. Well, I was going to say, Oh, what's up, Steve? Oh,
[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_06] I was going to say Devins. I think maybe because D has won. Yes. And that charm that Devins brings is a little irresistible, but if D cuts Devins and she's in the end, she's sounds like she's going to win. Yeah. That would be incredible to win Survivor and Big Brother. I think one of them, one of them is going to win. It's just a horse race, right? Wow. That really speaks to their,
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_05] you know, and they shout you out all the time. do they? They do. I said, I don't think he's listening, but they're talking to you like Jeff.
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_06] well, I think it does speak to the type of person that's on Big Brother or Amazing Race or traitors. They're not necessarily a strategist all the time. They have different parts of their personality that make them fun to watch in that situation. Survivor, we look for very good critical thinkers. That's part of our process. How are you at figuring out a metaphor or a situational problem? What would you do in this context?
[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_06] And I think you're seeing that. They walk into a game where the guns should be loaded against them already, and somehow they're still there. That's for their clever.
[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_05] Okay. I do think we need to wrap up now, Jay. I got it. Thank you for so much. You know what?
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_03] No, it was fun. Just doing your thing.
