[00:01:45] Brooke and I are super excited to be back covering Amazing Race, but we are here this week with the two teams eliminated from Amazing Race. So let's get into these exit interviews, and you can listen later in the week when Brooke and I drop our pit stop recap. Let's get into Amazing Race exit interviews one and two. Pit stop, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, stop.
[00:02:13] It's a pit stop, pit, pit, pit, pit, stop. It's a pit stop, pit, pit, pit, pit, stop. It's a pit stop, pit, stop, pit, stop, pit, stop. Welcome to the Purple Pants Podcast. We're not calling this an exit interview because before we get into anything, I just want to, you know, the Lord is telling me that I wanted to read a scripture, and it is, I want to say it's Matthew,
[00:02:40] now my computer want to mess me up, wait, hold on, where are we at? It is Matthew, wait, let me get it, I had it ready, but then I got to say it says, Matthew 1930, but many who are first will be last, and the last will be first. This is not an exit interview, okay? We are with the winners of Amazing Race Season 37, Jackie and Lauren on the Purple Pants Podcast. Welcome.
[00:03:11] How are you? I'm dying. That's amazing. They say dress for the job you want, and so I'm in purple because I want to be part of the Purple Team's family because I, there are... Happy birthday, poor job. What'd you say? Happy birthday. Happy birthday, poor dog. Happy birthday, poor dog. Bacon. Yes, it is Bacon's birthday. But he's Bacon. I don't know how to call him for it. Oh, you know, maybe fall or whatever. That's so, oh my God. Can you guys go? I love you so much.
[00:03:40] Okay, Bryce, I know, you're dying to talk. Go for it. Jackie, Lauren, this episode was amazing for me to watch because I feel like we go on these reality TV shows and everyone wants to win, and the reality is everyone can't win. And it is the way you ladies took your time, uplifted each other, supported each other, had fun. Okay?
[00:04:08] Because when Lauren came down there after she was climbing and Lauren said... She was like... I was like, oh, Lord. Hold that fan up again because it was, in fact... I'm just going to lay here. Lower me down, please, children. Like, it was... I did it. I did it. You know, and I mean, both of y'all, but I don't remember any of that. I was like seeing it for the first time.
[00:04:36] I just remember the feeling of grabbing that yellow envelope, and my whole life just came screaming out of my soul. And I don't know. It's a guttural scream. I was like, let me... You know, it was such a moment. It was such a moment. It was everything. I get... There are full episodes. I don't... I'm like, oh, I said that? I did that? Yes, right. You never know. I could never shut up, and people were like, I can't believe you said... I don't know what I said. Who knows? Listen. Like, I talk to stop signs. It's fine.
[00:05:05] That's right. That's right. I need to know, A, where I can see you two next, or B, when you can come to New York, or C, I'm going to be in Texas tomorrow. No, I'm not, but I'll fly there if you'll have me. Oh! And I just... I need more of you in my life. The pure positivity and just... Bryce and I were talking about how, first of all, congratulations on the stairs, because we were talking that... We said, you know, if someone was not good with stairs, we would normally, we'd be like, okay, come on, whatever.
[00:05:35] No. You guys could do no wrong. I was just so in love with every second that you were on the screen that I needed more seconds, and it just sounds kind of butt-kissy, and it is. I have... It's been a long time since there has been a team where I have just... You could... There's nothing negative. Like, there's... You're just joyous. To be in the back like that, and to have not a... Maybe you did, and they didn't show it. I don't know. Maybe every time... Maybe there was 80 times where you were like, F this. This sucks. No. But I doubt it.
[00:06:05] It was just pure joy. How? I need to learn how to do... How do you keep your spirits up when you know things are not going your way? I need to know this for me. I mean, we made the choice because guess what? We had each other. We love each other, and there was no way. Like, we are always winning, and we're like, these poor people don't have a sister like her, so I mean, I feel bad anyway, so they don't get to have her, but it was also like...
[00:06:34] It's so much like she's my big sister. And she's always lived life like that. I always say she's so excited. She's so excited about everything. We were in Vegas once, and she was like, I met this girl, and I asked her, do you know my sister? I'm like, Lauren, why would the woman at the pool know? She was like, I don't know. She's fabulous. She's like, why? And everybody should know her.
[00:07:02] I am like her biggest fan, just from day one. It's so funny. It's the little sister looking up to the big sister and not even knowing that I'm trying every day in my life to be like you. Because she is so genius, creative, talented, giving, just all the boxes, all the things that you strive to be in life. It's amazing. I always wanted her to have so much fun. She moved in. And she moved in my house. And what's so funny, one day she comes and she says, this is a typical Lauren thing.
[00:07:31] She goes, this house came out of your brain. And I was like, how did you do that? And I was like, oh, that's such a wonderful way of putting that. Like, oh, the work that you, and it just. Did you design your house or was that just a really weird thing for her to say? It was just a weird thing for the fact that she was like. I got it, Lauren. I feel what you're saying. You know what I'm saying? It's like, you know what? By the way, I don't know if you missed that. We moved in together to train together for six months.
[00:08:02] Got it. Six months. Yes. So we lived together, trained together, ate together, worked together for six months until we finished the race. So we were serious. We were not playing. We were in this to win this. And yeah, all our stuff, me and my husband's stuff is in storage. And here I came here. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. That part. I love that. I do want to say like hearing that moment of you talking about your mother.
[00:08:30] And I feel like in the Black community, there is this sense of you work, work, work, work, work until you retire. And then when you retire, it seems like something happens. And that really kind of rang true in my life. I think of like my grandmother, my mother, and then seeing you two on there on Amazing Race. And you're saying like it was life changing. Can you talk about that life changing moment? Like what was it? How do you feel now moving forward? Because you have the light. We see it.
[00:08:59] But I'd love to hear a little more about it. You're so right. And that's what our mom would count the day. Like she would count the days. She retired like one minute into when the accountant said, you cannot retire at this point. She waited two minutes and was like, I'm out. But what we saw was like tomorrow's not promised. You know?
[00:09:24] And so anytime you get those opportunities, you should grab them because you don't know if they're coming back. And we wanted to encourage other people to do that. To not say that you're going to wait because you just don't know. And we wanted to honor her by living our life like that, making sure that we don't wait. And it's going to be okay. I know a lot of people, whatever is holding them back from having an experience like this, it may not be specifically the amazing race, but whatever it is in life,
[00:09:53] it's like you got to know on the other side of that fear, there's something great. So it's like my husband and I took a chance. We shut down our house. We put all of our stuff in storage. And it was like, you know what? Let's go out there and live this life and have fun. And so, I mean, this was a part of that journey. We were focused on, you know, and our families thought we were crazy. It's like, well, you know, why aren't you doing the normal thing? Where who does that at 50 and 60?
[00:10:23] It's like, hey, lie and lie. 30, 30 or 35. Okay. Stop day. Now 51 and 61. So it's like, oh, hey, I got an idea because people thinks ideas are for the young and you can bounce back. Well, guess what? You can do that right now and rebuild and restructure life. And you can turn the page in your life and build the life you want. Period. And you got to believe, you got to have faith. Go for it. What have you got to lose? As we found out. Right.
[00:10:52] Jackie gave me a stat the other day. She before, I didn't know this because I asked her to go on the race. She's like a tech person. So she looked up what are the chances of, you know, how many people apply. It was less than 1%. So I'm like, sure. She's like, cool. I'll go because there's no way we're going to get on the show. Lo and behold. You can't possibly have thought you weren't going to get on. Knowing you two and your dynamic and your just like sheer bright light that you have, you can't possibly have thought you weren't going to get picked, right? Like.
[00:11:20] Listen, I was like, we're not like more calm down. Calm. What did I tell you? What did I tell you? No. What did you say? I said from the first, before I even hit submit, I said, we're going on the show. Period. I had absolutely no doubt. I had a job that came in that I said, I can't take it because I know. And we hadn't, mind you, we hadn't heard anything. No one had called us or anything. That's fake. But I know. Like it was just this knowing. We're going on the show. Period. And we never looked back. One time we applied and that was it.
[00:11:49] This is, honestly, I have amazing race questions. I don't even want to ask them. Like I just want to talk more about this. All right. I will say this one thing. So I'm doing something a little bit different with the exit interviews this season. I'm calling it the purple pants pit stop plus one, because I'm sure you've been asked like a ton of questions and you're probably giving the same answers over and over and over again. And there's probably things you want to talk about. So is there one thing that they didn't show you wish they did or that you just want the world to know about Jackie and Lauren or, you know, just what's that one thing that
[00:12:17] you haven't gotten to talk about a little exclusive content for Bryce and Brooke? Oh, that's good. I think for these shows, one of the things that we were saying is like the amazing part is making it because there's so much time wondering and not knowing and realize that everyone on this race wins. They've all won because it's amazing that you have those things. And you should look at your own life, like people who haven't done that. You have opportunities to win.
[00:12:47] It just taking the chance you're winning, taking the step you're winning. And it's hard for people to say that, like you have those opportunities and it's hard. I don't know. I just think about it all the time as we were preparing and getting ready. We knew how the episode was going to be. And it was like, no, but they don't understand. Like we won. We're ready. We won. That's how we started this interview. That's how we started this interview. Now, our time is limited.
[00:13:15] But listen, we the people got to ask some important questions. I need to know who is behind these reels that y'all is making with the Kendrick Lamar. Say now, say now, say now. Who is it? This one. This one. I know you had said on a previous podcast, oh, you can tell she's got kids. No, baby. That's all me. Oh, that's what I do. She films all the time. I don't pay her any attention. And then she'll go to bed. Say, I'm going to bed.
[00:13:44] And then she'll pop one of these things out. I'm like, that's my joy. I didn't get consent to be on that studio. And thank you. That was such a, I thank you for that. They're amazing. I will say that this is just, honestly, I would like a direct line to both of you for the future because you have just made my whole mood go up today. You are just, I'm excited that we got to actually speak because we've messaged. But it is just joy. Have you stayed in Texas?
[00:14:14] Are you still living together even after the show ended? No. We had to go back. We talk about that. Yeah, yeah. But we're talking about, yeah. It feels like it's been fun being here back at her house this week. And so, you know, we both have husbands. Apparently, they want us to live, you know. Well, when they call you back for- Actually, they get it. So-
[00:14:41] No, it's, I mean, when they call you back for another season, I assume, I don't have to assume. The answer is going to be, yes, he judges everything you're saying. But I assume you'll train together. You're packed. Yes. I love it. We are, we're dressed. We are ready to go today. If anything happens. Matter of fact, is that why you're calling us? Yeah. Because we're ready. We've got the power to do so. Oh. You could be out there already. Every season that I need you in my life. Every season. This is such a joy. Right?
[00:15:10] It's truly amazing. And I just want to leave you with, I hope you continue the content and everything that you're putting out online. You are still a part of the season and the world still wants to see you as this journey goes on. So I hope that you still put out content and watch the episode because your journey is just beginning, Lauren and Jackie. But Lauren, keep these videos up. I'm going to be in the DMs. What's up? We got a new song. What are you doing? Don't stop now. Please. It's been such a pleasure. Thank you so much for that.
[00:15:40] And we have people on our podcast. So maybe we can work it out if you're willing to come by and say hello and talk an episode. We'd love to have you. Hello. We'd love to. I mean, and I have to tell you just to slip it in. Like, I was so dumb. I was like so bummed. And I was like, Lauren goes, oh, we have to get a photo shoot. And I was like, I don't know. I don't know. And it made me, that was part of that where it was like, I'm so glad that we were able to like do that. It's just another expression of living life and doing those things and showing the example.
[00:16:09] And it's like, it was just really, it's just lovely. Like Lauren, Lauren just does it. Like, oh yeah. I was like, oh, oh. But she just goes with it though. And I love that about her. I love that. Little sisters tend to do that. She's going, just grab her and tell you're my little sister. We go where I say. Like, trust me on this one. Trust me on this one. We do have to go. We would love to stay and talk, but I don't want to get in trouble too bad. But we love, love, love. We will be in contact.
[00:16:39] And you know, Bryson Wynn is coming to Austin. I saw the message. I'm going to message y'all. Yeah, we're coming. We'll be seeing you in Austin. Oh, in Austin. Yes. We love you. The winners. We'll come see you. You heard it here first. The winners of Amazing Race Season 37, Jackie and Lauren, period. That's right. We love y'all. Thank you, Bryson. We love you. Keeping the menu rolling. Keeping the menu rolling. Keeping the menu rolling.
[00:17:09] Keep, keep, keep, keep it rolling. Willkommen beim Froster Feierabend-Tipp. Schneller als der Lieferservice von... Oh, keine Lust zu kochen. ...zu... Hey, schon fertig. [00:17:39] And welcome back to the Purple Pants Podcast. Pit stop coverage of Amazing Race Season 37. Brooke and I are very sad, but super excited to talk to Mark. Mark, how are you feeling today? Um, happy and blue. I get that. I'm blue with you, because Brooke and I, we were rooted for you this season. Thank you. I really was. Honestly, I didn't know what to think at the beginning.
[00:18:07] And then we saw a little bit of, you know, we haven't been out of the country and so on and so forth. I got to tell you, you pulled in my heartstrings. Real men can cry. Like, the bond that you two seem to have together is just so lovely. Um, I'm sure you've been asked a lot of questions today. So, we'll try and keep it somewhat brief. But, what did you find to be the hardest part about the leg of the Amazing Race? Was it the constant, was it jet lag? Was it the constant moving? Was it the language barriers?
[00:18:34] What did you think was something maybe you didn't expect to be so hard that was harder than you expected? I think the, uh, control that the taxi cabs had was, um, was, uh, really tough. But, I mean, it was the same for every team. Um, I'm sure if every team had a chance to talk about that, they would say that was very frustrating. Um, they, you got 14 teams and you got seven taxis out there ready. Um, you know, how does that work?
[00:19:03] Um, then as taxis are flying by left and right, you're trying to hail one and, um, you know, you're going across the street. You're just going everywhere. And then when you do get a taxi cab, um, you got some of them that like to play the game and some of them are, are just, um, hell bent. Uh, Hey, look, I'm supposed to go 45 and I'm going 45. And, you know, we got in, we got in one, uh, when we're going to the Buddha temple, um,
[00:19:33] and literally just one team after another was passing us in their taxis and they're waving and we're, we're, um, you know, we were just, but it was a fun, fun, you know, uh, for them. But, um, but that was a, you know, and to see their taxis go plum out of sight, you know, and, um, but, you know, and then there was another one cause we, God, we was in taxis all day. Um, there was another one where we got into a taxi probably towards the end and this dude
[00:20:03] was taking back roads and he was, he was getting it up on two wheels. I mean, he was, he was totally in and, and we literally made time and we passed other teams that didn't realize we were passing. So, you know, it's a whole lot of ebb and flow there that that's, that's out of our control. 100%. It was really great watching you, Larry and Mark. Um, was there anything you wish you would have done more before going on to amazing race?
[00:20:29] Is it like watching more seasons worked out, maybe took more taxis, anything you wish you would have like done a little more before going on? Um, I, you know, you always look back. I would have had a water pouch. Um, I was dehydrated. We went from, we went from being all day in LA. We caught a, a taxi or a talk called, uh, got to the airport and caught a plane at midnight
[00:20:59] and then was on the plane for 14 hours. Wow. Uh, that was a great place to hydrate. But, um, I was, I guess, too considerate. Um, I had a little Hong Kongian on each side of me, you know, two little people, uh, children. Um, and they didn't want to sit next to each other. So I was between them. I didn't want to wake them up to go get water. Um, they, they wouldn't, they weren't, um, they weren't coming by giving us water and I dehydrated.
[00:21:30] Um, it was unfortunate. Um, but, but other teams did. And, you know, you look over and I see Josiah, he's got a water pack on. Um, so he's got his own water. Uh, he's, he's set. Meanwhile, I would not run with any extra weight period, no matter if it helped me or if it didn't help me. Um, hi, Larry. I think you're on here too. Nice to meet, get to meet you sort of face, pop on when you can. Um, how far behind were you guys at the end?
[00:21:58] It seems like sometimes the editing makes it so that it looks like things are close when they are on, but it seemed like. You're right. It always does. But quite close this time. So if, if literally the black team, the yellow team and us finished a minute in, in a one minute span. And if you watch the show again, if you watch, um, while the yellow team is still on the mat and Phil saying, Hey, you're the sixth team to step on the mat.
[00:22:27] We're standing behind them waiting. And it, it was like, boom, boom, boom. We could literally, when we got out of the cab, we could literally see the other teams ahead of us. Wow. So, so yeah, no, I agree. It looks like on all the other seasons, it looks like the way they, the way they show the screens and they show one getting out of a cab and one of them running around a bush. And it looks like they're right there together, even though they aren't, but we really were.
[00:22:56] I mean, having done a season, you, you notice, you know, you go, when you watch your own, you'll say, Oh, that's not as close as it was, or this is not exactly how it happened, but they have to keep it interesting. Speaking of did Mark and Larry, did you guys watch a lot of seasons? Were you big fans of the race before you came on or how, how did you end up on the show? Yeah. So I, I was the super fan. I was, um, and, and, you know, told Larry about all the, so I talked him into getting on it with me.
[00:23:25] I had to find an old friend because the young people, you know, they can't take off work. You know, you, so, but, um, so once he committed to do this with me, he went back and, and just binge watched everything. And then we could talk about the characters and the goods and the bads and the do's and the don'ts. And you come up with your own strategy. Then he says, you know, three, two, one, let's go. And then you forget everything that you planned. Go.
[00:23:55] Mark and Larry, did you guys, when you were watching rewatching, did you happen to watch season 29 of amazing race? Yes. What'd you, what'd you think of that season? Was that Mark and Bob? See, yeah. Be honest. What'd you think of that? Was that Mark and Bob? No, that wasn't Mark and Bob. No, that was Brooke. That's Brooke and Scott. That is the stranger season. Okay. I don't know about what you say next.
[00:24:25] So, um, yeah, that's the season where they put strangers together. And they literally, um, I was in the running with, with, uh, with my brother-in-law and being on that. And they said, no, we're pitting strangers together. So we didn't make it. So kudos to you, Brooke. I could have met you seven years ago or something like that. Good now. Good now. Good now. Um, did you want to talk about the families and everything, right?
[00:24:55] And then, well, I did, uh, Mark, my dad has a very similar ringtone to you. So hearing my darling wife, I was looking around like, is my dad here? What, uh, what did your family think of seeing you two on amazing race? Was it fun to watch in this experience and the rollout of all of the press and the images coming out? What is that like to share with your families? Um, so our, our wives are friends.
[00:25:20] Um, so they were, you know, they communicated, um, and they were there, they're, they're used to us first off being on the fire department. We're always overnight at the fire station because we work 24 hour shifts. Um, they're, they're used to, they're comfortable with being at home by themselves. They're used to us going on all these crazy wild hair trips that we go on together. Uh, so they, they were comfortable with it. Totally supportive.
[00:25:47] Um, they, the watch party we had last night, uh, we got to see, uh, I didn't get to watch the show because I was busy bouncing, talking to everybody that was there. Um, fantastic reunion for, for us, uh, for, for Larry and, and, and myself and all of our old friends that. Yeah. We, we probably had over 60 of our old friends show up. Wow. You know, so it was a pretty good watch party. Hey Larry. Hey.
[00:26:16] Uh, turn on your camera so we can see your mug. Does that start video? Uh, no. Oh, and we're very, very up to date on all of it. On the lower left of your screen, there's going to be a little camera that has a line through it. There's a little camera on the bottom left. There's a little camera with a line through it. Yeah. I touched that. All right.
[00:26:46] Touch your nose. Hey. Hey. Hey. Ladies and gentlemen. Hurry. Hey. Hey, y'all. Oh. Hi. Hi. There's my lab. Who is that? This is Jesse Jane. Hi, Jane. That's so cute. Oh my God. Look at him. Mine's sleeping in the others. He never sleeps. He's usually on the podcast. So we're doing a little something different this season. I want to do something I'm calling the Purple Pants Pit Stop Plus One because I'm sure you
[00:27:15] guys have answered six gazillion questions in the past 24 hours. I'm sure there are things that maybe you wanted to talk about that you weren't asked or when I did this, there were so many things I wanted to say, but it wasn't a question on the table. So I wanted to turn it over to both of you. Is there anything that you haven't been asked that you want to share or that they didn't show that you wish they would have shown or that you just generally want the amazing race world, the whole world, let's call it the whole world who's going to see this, to know about Mark and to know about Larry?
[00:27:45] No. No? Okay. So. Okay, cool. Okay. So I will share behind the scenes stuff. Larry had a little man crush on some of the security guys. They thought they were really cool. I know those security guys. That makes sense. You understand, don't you? Those guys are bad. Those two are bad. They could kill you with two fingers. That's right. And you want them to like you. So do what you got to do. Yeah.
[00:28:15] Our goal was to make them laugh every day. Yeah. They were kind of. They don't. Not only do they not laugh, they don't smile. Yeah. When you get them to smile, you've done something. There was someone on my season whose goal it was to make one of them smile once. Yes. There you go. And on leg 11, he did it. And he's like, I can go home. I don't need to be part of this anymore. My job here is done. Yeah. Well, you know. And then he did go home. So I don't think that's what he wanted. But. Yeah. Well, you know, there are paramedics and everything.
[00:28:44] And they know Mark and I, since we're in the, you know, fire department, they knew if something went down, we could help them. And I think they, they appreciate this because they were always, they're a top notch man. I'm telling you, they're sharp. I'd rather have one of them as my partner. Probably, you know, they. No offense, Mark. How's your relationship now? How is the race affected? It's as strong as ever.
[00:29:13] If you can't pick on your buddies, who can you pick at? Absolutely. If Phil were to call you today, we know season 40 of Amazing Race is around the corner and there's speculation that it could be a lot of different things. But Phil picks up the phone and says, Mark and Larry, we need you for season 40. Are you packing your bags? You already know he called us, don't you? Yeah. They said they were going to tell anybody. First team out. First team out.
[00:29:43] Edition. Yeah, we want to pick who we're going against though. Yeah. Wouldn't we all? I want fat people and, you know, maybe got bad limbs. I don't want these people in shape, you know. Those guys are unbelievable that they picked this year. They would pick me. That's fine. It seemed like everyone was getting along really well. I assume you had. It's hard, I think, what you had to do because going east to the far east first is a much longer flight. Right.
[00:30:10] Usually it'll start going either south or to Europe and you have a much, you know, four or six, even eight hour flight to start. But you guys were saying you had a 14 hour flight off the bat. I'm sure it gave you time to get to know all of the other teams and to bond a bit. If there was one team that you were going to go get a beer with tomorrow, who's your favorite? Oh my gosh. I like Jazz and Pops. I love how we just answered it. I like them too. We got to meet them.
[00:30:37] They'll probably be the fan favorites when it's all said and done. Great, great, genuine guys. Side note, I have a Boston Terrier right in that room right there. So that's my favorite thing that's ever happened. Hi, sweet girl. But we literally bonded with every team, had a connection with every team. Even though we got kicked out, even though we had the quarantine and we couldn't talk, we had a really, really good bond with every one of them.
[00:31:10] Loved Ernest and Bridget. Ernest is just a genuine guy. Mike and Nick just... So Mike and Nick... So Brooke understands. You name all the people that you're interviewing against during the process. And we call them Hans and Franz because they auditioned for season 36 with us. And they put...
[00:31:37] And I don't know if they did it for y'all, but they put all of us in a room together for the day during the final interview before selection. And Hans and Franz or Mike and Nick were standing in the back the whole time. They were standing back there. They were... But I mean, you know, so we had a huge laugh about that. Did they know that you did that? What are the odds that we both got on the side? Okay. But honestly... I'm going to ask them to come me up next time. Yes. That's wonderful.
[00:32:06] Well, this... Larry, you live in a house I want to live in. I'm loving everything that's happening with the dogs. This has been so great to be able to speak with you both. Congratulations on getting to be on the show. You were wonderful to watch. The bond that you have and just the support that you had for one another the entire time was truly moving. I cry a lot. But that's not to say I wasn't moved because I did cry when you guys went home. So we're sorry to see you go. We hope to get to see you back another time.
