[00:04:51] but all of the seasons of Amazing Race

[00:04:52] that I have watched in this new era,

[00:04:54] like they don't hold a match,

[00:04:57] a candle to season five.

[00:04:59] The way I was on the edge of my seat

[00:05:01] watching episode 12 last night was so crazy.

[00:05:07] Like, I mean, I was literally like the emotions

[00:05:10] to the point that I got a text from a neighbor

[00:05:13] saying if I could keep it down, can you keep it down?

[00:05:16] I'm watching Amazing Race season five, episode 12.

[00:05:19] Yeah, it's that good.

[00:05:22] I mean, this season, this is the finale

[00:05:25] to the season to save the franchise

[00:05:26] because episodes seasons one through four were great,

[00:05:30] but season five was a whole new level.

[00:05:32] It was the first season to visit all six

[00:05:34] of the Inhabitable Contents.

[00:05:37] Uruguay, Argentina, Russia, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania,

[00:05:40] UAE, Philippines, Canada, first visit

[00:05:43] to have the yield, which we saw the last time

[00:05:46] to be used here, which was an incredible tool

[00:05:49] to have the first season

[00:05:51] to have a differently-abled contestant in Charlotte

[00:05:53] with dwarfism to have only one male team,

[00:05:58] which we had in season 29, but which is a rarity

[00:06:02] to only have one.

[00:06:03] It's usually a more male-dominated sport, I was gonna say,

[00:06:07] and of the first five seasons,

[00:06:09] one, two, three, four of them were won by male-male teams.

[00:06:14] The first season where a team was eliminated

[00:06:16] outside the pit stop, I'll say it that way

[00:06:18] because I don't wanna get into a fight

[00:06:19] over the women's-

[00:06:20] Yeah, cause we're not even about to-

[00:06:21] Eliminated on the race course.

[00:06:23] That's how we'll say it that way.

[00:06:25] Wait.

[00:06:26] Oh, sure, okay, fine.

[00:06:28] It is the last season where there was no limit

[00:06:31] on roadblocks, this season changed the rule

[00:06:33] where people had to start doing an even amount of the tasks.

[00:06:36] It is the last season where you could have a tie

[00:06:39] at the pit stop.

[00:06:40] From then on, one team would go by a minute

[00:06:43] before the next team.

[00:06:44] It's the team members where both team members

[00:06:46] were on the mat first.

[00:06:48] They checked in first.

[00:06:49] No tie.

[00:06:49] That wasn't a rule up until now?

[00:06:52] You have a tie until season five.

[00:06:54] And this is the first season where you have

[00:06:58] a black winner on this race.

[00:07:01] I need you.

[00:07:03] I did not do wrong.

[00:07:05] I am very, very pleased with how pleased you are

[00:07:09] with the season that we watched.

[00:07:11] Yes, and I think when we first started this,

[00:07:14] I think maybe episode one or episode two,

[00:07:16] and I looked at the cast and I was like, you know,

[00:07:19] clearly the diversity initiative hadn't kicked in yet.

[00:07:22] And I'm rooting for everybody black this season.

[00:07:25] And I had no, I'd be just one team.

[00:07:28] I had no idea.

[00:07:30] And yet they pulled it out.

[00:07:31] And so in honor, it's apple juice because it's morning,

[00:07:33] but I am drinking some sparkling apple juice.

[00:07:37] Toast to Chippen Kim, the winners of season five

[00:07:42] And I mean, before we get into this episode

[00:07:45] and before this special guest, whoever you have coming,

[00:07:54] after watching this,

[00:07:55] like I really feel like Amazing Race

[00:07:58] in the seasons that I have watched.

[00:08:00] They've been great, you know,

[00:08:01] I've fallen in love with people.

[00:08:03] You know, I have my Lewis and my Michelle.

[00:08:05] I have my Ashley.

[00:08:07] Todd.

[00:08:09] Todd.

[00:08:10] I was about to say I got my Ashley and my Martin,

[00:08:12] but I'm like, that's how last night I got my Ashley and my Todd.

[00:08:15] I have my Brandon and Anthony.

[00:08:19] I have my Danny's, but like I really have to say that.

[00:08:47] These charter planes.

[00:08:48] I a thousand percent get what you're saying because honestly,

[00:08:52] the airport drama delays catching your own flight,

[00:08:58] booking flights, which flights are so good.

[00:09:02] It really changes the dynamics.

[00:09:05] It really it really is the equalizer.

[00:09:08] And so.

[00:09:10] Yeah, it's just it's been a really good rewatch.

[00:09:18] And I am very happy that we got to watch it.

[00:09:21] And I'm really even more excited to get through this episode with you

[00:09:25] and whatever our guest is because I have a lot of notes and a lot of things.

[00:09:31] To say.

[00:09:33] So this is a double episode.

[00:09:35] There really were 13 episodes aired as 12 episodes.

[00:09:38] This is a double link.

[00:09:40] But honestly, in a in a current season, this could have been like five episodes.

[00:09:44] The amount that the amazing race packed in to the season finale of season five

[00:09:48] is so mammoth that and just so glorious.

[00:09:53] So we have four teams competing in the last two legs,

[00:09:56] but only three teams will get to the last leg to cross the finish line.

[00:10:00] And we have lies. We have exhaustion.

[00:10:03] We have the most intense roadblock, one of.

[00:10:07] The most intense roadblocks that really changes the trajectory for one of the final four teams.

[00:10:13] We have breakdowns and after we have to talk about

[00:10:18] bacon and after seventy two thousand miles, we have our winners.

[00:10:26] So I am excited to jump into the episode with you.

[00:12:27] I from Survivor Realm and I've watched some of the newer seasons.

[00:12:30] And so after the season ended, Brooks said, let's watch a season

[00:12:34] and talk about it.

[00:12:36] And we watched season five.

[00:12:39] And soon as I saw that, as soon as I saw the first episode,

[00:12:42] I saw I'm ruined for everybody black.

[00:12:43] I mean, it's only Chip and Kim.

[00:12:46] And I literally just finished the episode last night and Chip,

[00:12:51] I was in tears like you guys are such an inspiration.

[00:12:55] Now, I'll be honest, Chip, I was cussing you out.

[00:12:59] OK, I was cussing you out.

[00:13:01] I'm saying, why are you helping them?

[00:13:04] Nice to the special guest.

[00:13:05] Why are you tipping them a hundred dollars?

[00:13:07] We only got 30.

[00:13:10] But it is I am lost for words, Chip.

[00:13:13] It is truly an honor to have you here.

[00:13:55] So we feel the same experience and stuff.

[00:13:58] So it's just amazing.

[00:14:18] And when you're talking the finale with the man who wanted himself,

[00:14:23] I don't even want to.

[00:14:24] I mean, I will all guide us a little bit, but I just want to know

[00:14:26] your take on anything and everything that happened.

[00:14:30] There are from what I know, which is less than from what you know,

[00:14:34] things that were an aired just behind the scenes like conspiracies

[00:14:38] and stuff like that that went on during.

[00:14:40] And I know it was it was I don't want to say the number.

[00:14:43] It was a lot of years ago.

[00:14:44] I have a little bit of trouble remembering some of my stuff.

[00:14:47] And it was like seven years ago.

[00:14:49] So I don't know if you're going to remember all the details.

[00:14:51] It's OK if you don't have an answer to all of it.

[00:14:53] But I feel like that is weird.

[00:14:55] Brooke, if you look at the year is easy math is 2024.

[00:15:01] We did it 2004.

[00:15:04] You know, we two thousand four.

[00:15:05] That's 20 years.

[00:15:10] It doesn't even seem that it was that many years ago.

[00:15:20] And the amazing race being a winner

[00:15:31] And it's not as famous, but as a broker,

[00:15:34] I may be talking to somebody when I'm door knocking and then they're like,

[00:15:38] yeah, mm hmm.

[00:15:40] And then I and then I try to say something like, yeah.

[00:15:43] And I said, have you ever heard of the show?

[00:15:44] The Amazing Race?

[00:15:45] And they go, uh, yeah, yeah, I have.

[00:15:48] Yeah, my wife and I won.

[00:15:50] Oh my God.

[00:15:52] Then they want to talk to me and I said, OK, well, let's have a little coffee,

[00:15:55] a little tea. So I still use it, baby.

[00:15:59] It is still opening doors.

[00:16:01] I love that.

[00:16:03] If anybody needs real estate in California,

[00:16:08] put a very nice thing and woke up quite early today.

[00:16:13] So grateful for that.

[00:16:15] What is the name of the company?

[00:17:24] after all these years, I don't know what came first, the chicken or the egg.

[00:17:33] Me, well, first of all, I have to start off by letting you know

[00:17:35] that the reason Kim and I went on the Amazing Race

[00:17:39] because it was our favorite show, but we never had the opportunity

[00:17:43] to do it before because we had a very successful

[00:17:48] information technology company.

[00:17:50] It was thirty five million dollars a year

[00:17:53] and our business partner cheated us out of it.

[00:17:57] And by that time, we were in bankruptcy and foreclosure.

[00:18:01] And it was like the worst time in our lives.

[00:18:04] And we had never experienced anything like that.

[00:18:08] And he was one of our best friends, too.

[00:18:10] So it's just we just felt dejected.

[00:18:13] So at that time, a few people, like five people came up,

[00:18:17] you should be on the Amazing Race, you should be on the Amazing Race.

[00:18:20] And, Brooke, as you know, there are no prototypical

[00:18:23] amazing racers, so we felt that it was a word from God or whatever.

[00:18:28] And we did not go on the Amazing Race to win the million dollars

[00:18:32] because we're still the oldest people to win the oldest couple

[00:18:36] to win the Amazing Race.

[00:18:37] I think a pin and his wife,

[00:18:43] I think I think one of them is younger or whatever,

[00:18:45] but I'm still we the first and we the oldest.

[00:18:47] So forget that.

[00:18:48] And so how could I forget Kim?

[00:18:51] I mean, that's kind of crazy, isn't it?

[00:18:53] But but we when we were on the race, we did not go on to win at all.

[00:18:58] We just wanted to have fun and do something that we had always been too busy to do.

[00:19:03] And by the time we got to that yield,

[00:19:08] that's when Kim, who's competitive, I'm a winner.

[00:19:13] I win. I love to win.

[00:19:14] But I'm more about everybody having fun and it being I'm like the party guy.

[00:19:20] And so Kim, she said, I know that your little brother

[00:19:24] and your little sister, we got to win.

[00:19:27] I went and so she still teases me to this day.

[00:19:29] She calls me.

[00:19:30] Not a good name, but I, you know, she calls me.

[00:19:35] She said, I have to make this do it.

[00:19:39] And then when I did it, I still to this day,

[00:19:42] that is the only thing I regret about the Amazing Race

[00:19:46] is that I love Colin so much.

[00:19:50] And but we could never have a relationship after that.

[00:19:53] I've seen him a few times, but, you know, just that is still that,

[00:19:56] you know, because that was my boy, but we needed the million.

[00:20:01] No, you know, I hear that.

[00:20:03] I will say we you turned to teams that I didn't want.

[00:20:05] They didn't air the part where I said, I don't want to do this.

[00:20:07] I want to do this. That's fine. I did it.

[00:20:10] I was part of a team that did it.

[00:20:11] We did it. It's my biggest regret to put somebody in a position

[00:20:15] where it might push them back.

[00:20:17] Yeah. But it happened and it worked out.

[00:20:20] I believe as it was supposed to work out.

[00:20:23] I am actually surprised to hear the story.

[00:20:26] I love the fact that the Amazing Race didn't air any of that information

[00:20:30] and didn't portray you as the team that like needed the money.

[00:20:34] It was doing it for the money.

[00:20:35] You two were seen so much as just gregarious and happy

[00:20:40] and loving the experience and just having the time of your lives

[00:20:43] in every turn of the year.

[00:20:45] But I'm sorry to interrupt you.

[00:20:48] No, please.

[00:20:49] No, Brooke, seriously, you got to know we we like knew there was no chance

[00:20:58] of us winning. It was not for the money.

[00:21:01] So it was not for I mean, as a matter of fact, you know,

[00:21:04] have you ever heard of this guy?

[00:21:06] Virtual Ben Mustard.

[00:21:07] I have heard of him.

[00:21:09] But that guy would come up to us and you know how we talk.

[00:21:12] He would go cheap, keen.

[00:21:15] You could actually win this thing.

[00:21:17] And we would go, oh, thank you, Bertram.

[00:21:19] And when he would turn around, we say he's so foolish.

[00:21:22] He he's just telling us anything to keep us racing.

[00:21:26] There's we didn't even we didn't even what I care about winning.

[00:21:31] We we wanted to race the whole race.

[00:21:33] So that was if we had any strategy at all,

[00:21:37] the strategy was that all the young people always wanted to come in first

[00:21:43] and they want to.

[00:21:44] But the object of the game until the end is not to come in last.

[00:21:49] So we would be doing stuff at the airport when we would get off

[00:21:52] an airplane and it would be about four couples on our plane.

[00:21:56] I will go, guys, man, these producers just want us to,

[00:22:00] you know, go all crazy and run.

[00:22:01] Here's the deal. We know Colin, you're the fastest.

[00:22:04] Why don't we just walk?

[00:22:06] You sign up first, Brandon and Nikki sign up second outside.

[00:22:10] We'll sign up.

[00:22:11] But let's just let's just that we can serve our energy the whole time.

[00:22:39] But, you know, so how long has it been?

[00:22:46] I don't know if you watched it before you're talking to us,

[00:22:48] but how long has it been since you've seen the finale episode?

[00:22:52] Of ours. Yeah. Oh, man.

[00:22:58] I don't know for sure, but maybe five years or so.

[00:23:03] I don't know. I don't even know if I've seen the whole thing.

[00:23:06] Oh, but here's what happens every single year about five times a year.

[00:23:10] And Brooke, you might think about doing this, too.

[00:23:13] Elementary schools here in South Orange County,

[00:23:18] they one school did it and then now five schools do it.

[00:23:22] What they do is for their third and fourth grade classes,

[00:23:25] they look at our season for, you know, their

[00:23:30] geography, geography classes or the geography portion of a class.

[00:23:35] And then when our finale comes on,

[00:23:39] we're in doing similar to what we did with you, Bryce.

[00:23:42] And we have the kids in an auditorium

[00:23:46] and then it's a chip and you are the winner.

[01:30:45] The trunk is gonna be open,

[01:30:47] Colin's gonna throw his bag in there and just zoom into.

[01:30:50] And they had a driver of that town car

[01:30:52] who was like the laws you can't go above this

[01:30:54] so we're gonna have to break the law.

[01:30:56] Like their driver was on it.

[01:30:58] And then of course you see editing cuts

[01:31:00] of Chip and Kimber in traffic

[01:31:01] and you're like, oh my God, their lead is gone.

[01:31:04] Oh my God, it's dwindling.

[01:31:05] But they get to these stockyards in Fort Worth,

[01:31:08] Chip and Kimber first, Colin and Christie are second.

[01:31:11] And then you have to go into this maze.

[01:31:14] So talk to us a little bit about this last task

[01:31:16] that you had and was it only two boxes

[01:31:19] you had to find or was it more and they only

[01:31:22] showed you two?

[01:31:24] They did.

[01:31:24] Oh they only showed you.

[01:31:27] So you have to go into this giant maze

[01:31:37] So what were you guys feeling when you got there

[01:32:21] And so we were there for an abnormally long time.

[01:32:33] did you see Colin and Christie pulling up in their town car?

[01:32:36] You're like that can't be them, that's a town car.

[01:32:38] But then we kind of saw that it was them

[01:32:40] and then we went to town car,

[01:32:42] then we're like freaking out.

[01:32:44] And then, cause we knew that Colin probably knew

[01:32:49] cause there has to be a trick to do an amazing.

[01:32:53] Sure enough, he said always go left.

[01:32:54] Left, go left, go left.

[01:32:56] It's smart, it's smart.

[01:32:58] I mean, you'll end up in a square

[01:33:18] didn't tell him he had to stop but he didn't stop.

[01:33:21] And then Brandon Nicole gets the maze

[01:33:23] while Colin and Christie are still there

[01:33:24] but they're in third and I think they're falling out of it.

[01:33:27] So we see you and Kim Chip in traffic to the final mat

[01:33:31] and then we see Colin and Christie's driver honking

[01:33:33] everybody and basically running people off the road

[01:33:36] breaking every law.

[01:33:37] But then we see they can't hide it anymore

[01:33:40] because they show a taxi pulling up to the final mat.

[01:33:44] So we know it's you guys

[01:33:45] and then we see Kim go hold my hand

[01:33:47] and you guys together holding hands run onto the mat.

[01:33:51] Can you just tell us what you remember feeling?

[01:33:54] I will never forget that moment of jumping on the mat

[01:33:57] and thinking is somebody hiding are we definitely first

[01:34:00] but talk us through how you felt.

[01:34:04] Yeah, that was wow.

[01:34:08] That would rival the best moment in my life.

[01:34:12] That was wonderful.

[01:34:15] Your people after they tease the,

[01:34:18] no, they don't tease they ask the question like this.

[01:34:20] They say, well, other than when you got married

[01:34:24] you know, does the amazing race, we say,

[01:35:09] but just let me know I'm gonna have tremendous favor

[01:35:15] So then all while we were going on auditions

[01:35:18] and stuff Kim was like, do you think we're gonna get on?

[01:35:20] We're gonna get on.

[01:35:21] I knew we were gonna get on.

[01:35:23] The Lord never showed us we were gonna win.

[01:35:25] He just showed and the favor is still to this day, Brooke.

[01:35:30] You'll be, I'm telling you, oh just think

[01:35:33] 20 years from now, people will still,

[01:35:36] oh but do you know who Jonathan Baker is?

[01:35:42] From the next season?

[01:35:44] Yes, the one who went crazy.

[01:36:25] He got on Dr. Phil and all that stuff.

[01:37:34] It was just such a beautiful season really for me

[01:37:37] from start to finish, I knew what happened.

[01:37:40] So it was also there was like little added extra bonus

[01:37:44] knowing who he was gonna root for

[01:37:46] knowing how well you both did

[01:37:48] and just knowing like the arc that you both had.

[01:40:17] and I just got inducted into the Hall of Fame

[01:40:21] at my high school and it was a major sports school.

[01:40:32] I was good but you know I wasn't great

[01:40:34] because they had some great.

[01:40:36] But, you know and so it really means a lot

[01:40:39] to go back and give back to Dorsey High School

[01:40:42] in Los Angeles, the best high school in the world.

[01:40:45] And it just means a lot that it put a lot of eyes

[01:40:49] because they wouldn't have looked at the amazing race

[01:40:53] for any other reason than us being on there.

[01:40:56] And yeah, it means a lot to represent

[01:40:59] and that we represented as a strong black couple,

[01:41:04] a loving black couple, a respectful black couple.

[01:41:09] And I praise God that, you know we were able to do that.

[01:41:15] And everything we do is to actually the way

[01:41:20] I live my life Bryce is, and when I have some decisions

[01:41:24] to make and I know that I can go left or right

[01:41:27] is thinking about my kids.

[01:42:52] has a few cute kids, lives in Houston.
